No one gave it a second thought, unlike today where 50 people would take a video on their phone; post it to social media; and then start ripping the MTA a new one over how unsafe the trains are. |

Wow...seeing these pics, it's hard to believe this was in my adult lifetime!! Back then, I only knew the Port Washington Branch- and I thought of the whole LIRR as M1/M3- like a suburban version of the subway. Today, I think that's actually true- even in diesel country. In 2013, I was a regular user of the Oyster Bay branch between Glen Street and the Main Line. These pics, as well as the Montauk pics, show a whole other side to the story- the eastern end of the line had a real rural flavor even in the fairly recent past. |

No one EVER parked there. It was a dirt parking lot, weed infested platform, and horrible. It was as bad or worse as any east of Ronkonkoma station was before the rebuilds. But they put in the platform, paved the parking lot (granted, did make it smaller), and made it look like a "real" station, and the people came. Now it's hard to find a parking spot there. Center moriches was a decent station, even before the abandonment, with a nice parking lot, etc. The service was crumby, (just as Bellports was). Most trains skipped Center Moriches and Bellport. If they had normal service, and put a one car platform there like Bellport, people would use it. It beats dring and using Mastic-Shirley, or worse, driving to Ronkonkoma. |

It's from the book "Change at Ozone Park". It said it was open. Service was horrible near the end. Probably as bad as the Long Island City local stations near the end. The line was truncated at Ozone Park once the line to Rockaway was given over to the subway. So for about 10-15 years, the line already began to deteriorate with very few trains before finally closing in 1962. |

The old diesels until the late 90's, were rolling disaters for the commuters, but railfans dreams. They were like in a time warp and made for interesting railroading. Unfortunately, I think I slowly lost my interest in rail photography slowly after the old diesels left. I did some photos of the new (new, lol, 20 years old now) trains, but I never really got interested in them like the old rolling stock. It was so much fun back then. |

Bellwort's service is limited but enough to make it feasible for commuters. Bellports service, even before 1998 rebuild was usable, now even more so. East of Ronkonkoma, not at all. Rush hours, Just about every train that goes through to Speonk stops, and most of the Montauk trains too. Rush hours, it's half hourly or better at that station which is fine. Medford, (even Holtsville), Yaphank, Riverhead, etc would have more usage if they had decent service. Even if it was hourly at rush hour to/from Riverhead in the least. Its absurd that Riverhead and west doesn't have normal service. |

I think you are thinking of the 2900 series Pullman Standard coaches purchased in the early 1950s. Those cars had their own low horsepower diesel engine mounted underneath that ran a generator forthe lights/heat & A/C. Those cars were never mixed with the converted MUs. They ran unto themselves w/o any FA or MP15 powerpacks. They were usually on Pt. Jefferson trains and were in service well into the 90s. |

P72 cars each had their own diesel generator sets. The needed nothing from the loco and were not train-lined for push-pull. They seldom ran to Oyster Bay or Greenport due to lack of turning facilities or need for 2 MP-15's back to back once FRA banned cab-forward operation.PT72 and PT72 cars still had motor-alternators requiring 650v DC HEP. The Alco FA started off with their original prime moved, but later replaced with a smaller, newer one. I don't know what the EMD F's had, but they had a prime mover of some sort. Some MP15's were modified to be either a loco or a power pack, and 169 was converted to be only a power pack. |
