Wow...seeing these pics, it's hard to believe this was in my adult lifetime!! Back then, I only knew the Port Washington Branch- and I thought of the whole LIRR as M1/M3- like a suburban version of the subway. Today, I think that's actually true- even in diesel country. In 2013, I was a regular user of the Oyster Bay branch between Glen Street and the Main Line.These pics, as well as the Montauk pics, show a whole other side to the story- the eastern end of the line had a real rural flavor even in the fairly recent past. |
