I think you are thinking of the 2900 series Pullman Standard coaches purchased in the early 1950s. Those cars had their own low horsepower diesel engine mounted underneath that ran a generator forthe lights/heat & A/C. Those cars were never mixed with the converted MUs. They ran unto themselves w/o any FA or MP15 powerpacks. They were usually on Pt. Jefferson trains and were in service well into the 90s.
