P72 cars each had their own diesel generator sets. The needed nothing from the loco and were not train-lined for push-pull. They seldom ran to Oyster Bay or Greenport due to lack of turning facilities or need for 2 MP-15's back to back once FRA banned cab-forward operation.

PT72 and PT72 cars still had motor-alternators requiring 650v DC HEP. The Alco FA started off with their original prime moved, but later replaced with a smaller, newer one. I don't know what the EMD F's had, but they had a prime mover of some sort. Some MP15's were modified to be either a loco or a power pack, and 169 was converted to be only a power pack.
