Yeah, it's pretty straightforward: Your risk of being ticketed increases with your speed. A little over the limit: minimal risk. A lot over the limit: more risk. Grace speed based on discretion of the officer. Get the wrong officer, no "grace." If police were regularly ticketing for 1 MPH over, everyone's eyes would be glued to their speedometer instead of focused on the road. |

I am most comfortable on normal highways between 65 and 70. I don't generally drive faster than that. The 55 mph limits are ridiculous.Even when I have been on roads where the limit is 75, I don't generally drive faster than that. |

That is the main flaw of any minimum speed requirements: you risk some people who are more obsessed with following the laws speeding up in severe conditions to meet the minimum speed. Common sense would say don't worry about it but common sense is lacking among many. |

"limit" means limit as in limitation as in "cannot exceed limit".At 54 yor are good. At 55 you are at the LIMIT of good. At 56 you have run afoul of the law. Your post makes it seem as if everybody is obligated to do 55 even if they want to go at 50. |

It also depends on weather and traffic conditions.Going 65 in a 55 during heavy rain and traffic is different than going 67 in a 55 on a beautiful moderately trafficked day. |

Most highways in have a minimum speed of 40 if the speed limit is 55, there's signs usually next to the speed limit signs.While I vaguely remember seeing them elsewhere, the only place that stands out to me is the L.I.E. I remember that clearly because I remember laughing to myslef how in the rush hours it's probably hard to even go the minimum! :-) |

In the non rush hours, everybody was doing a steady 70 on the 405 freeway, and not speeding up or slowing down like they do around here. I remember that because at one point we were in one of the center lanes and we needed to get over to the right for an upcoming exit. There was a car in the lane next to us on the right, and he was about 2 car lengths behind us. We were able to move over with no problem. If we were anywhere else, that car would have most likely sped up and either hit us or would have had to slam on the brakes to avoid us. For the record, I wasn't the one driving... :-) |

For example, a cop can pull you over for going 50 (in a 55) on a snow covered road where driving like that would be reckless.Similarly, you obviously aren't going to get pulled over for going "20" in traffic conditions in a Minimum 40. |

It pisses me off when the Mass. troopers are camped out on the side of I-95 or 128 at 6 a.m., and everyone slows from 40 to 25. |

NY135 and NY27 east of Babylon could also easily be 60 or 65. Back in the late 60s or early 70s before the energy crisis mandated the nationwide 55 limit, 135 allowed 60. The LIE allowed 60 throughout Nassau County.Pennsylvania Turnpike's Northeast Extension allows 65 between Scranton and Allentown. That seemed excessive, as there are only two lanes in each direction and the two carriageways are separated by a very narrow median. That seems to be the case on the mainline Turnpike as well. |

The fastest I can recall driving was 80-85 in my 2002 Honda Accord on a steep downgrade on southbound I-83 about to cross the state line from Pennsylvania to Maryland. This fact was called to my attention by a passenger.Back in the early 70s my Dad noticed he was hitting 90 in a rental car on I-25 somewhere south of Albuquerque. Other vehicles were passing us freely. |

Whenever I drive NY440 a/k/a the West Shore Expressway at 60, other vehicles blur past me. The Belt between Sheepshead Bay and Howard Beach used to be very good for speed at those rare times when there wasn't much traffic or construction.The Clearview, Korean Vets Parkway (formerly Richmond Parkway), the elevated Gowanus straightaway, and possibly the Bronx River Parkway north of Pelham/Fordham are really the only other stretches of limited access highway within city limits to offer good speed- traffic conditions notwithstanding. |

Casino buses along the NJTP, Garden State and Connecticut's I-95 seem to routinely exceed 80. I believe buses are allowed in the left lane of certain New Jersey highways, but not in NYS or Connecticut. The drivers routinely ignore this regulation. |
