I have no problem at all with trucks. I just don't want to be "stuck" behind one. They have no business in the left lane, except perhaps to pass slower trucks.

Arizona doesn't have different speed limits for trucks like most states do. I was once going 75 mph in the right lane in the middle of nowhere and was passed by an 18-wheel semi going about 85 mph. I think that he was only going 10 miles over the limit.

The speed limits in the northeast are much lower than out here. Our speed limits on freeways in metro LA are usually 65 mph. We have have 50 mph speed limits on some surface streets in Orange County. We generally drive much faster than you guys with more or less the same congestion. This is not necessarily a good thing though. We have among the highest pedestrian fatality rate in the country despite having sidewalks and crossing walks everywhere.

The 80 limit is only in West Texas on I-10, I-20 or both. It was news when they raised it, but I don't know if other states have followed suit. I can assure you that it's not 80 on the entirety of I-40 through Texas, unless it's changed in the past year and a half.

New York is very stingy with its speed limits. Why is the speed limit on NYC freeways only 50 and not 55? It doesn't make sense.

In NJ they seem to be more liberal with this. The speed limit on I-280 hits 65 pretty much as soon as you leave East Orange. This is the functional equivalent of the LIE hitting 65 after crossing the Van Wyck, or maybe at the Queens/Nassau border.

Why is the speed limit on NYC freeways only 50 and not 55? It doesn't make sense.

The limits of the roadway design? The poor condition of the road surface? Also, the road has a higher potential capacity with everyone doing 50mph than 55 mph.

This is from the current drivers handbook. When I got my California license the wording was more along the lines of "Drive in whichever lane you feel most comfortable."

Traffic lanes are often referred to
by number. The left or “fast” lane
is called the “Number 1 Lane.” The
lane to the right of the “Number
1 Lane” is called the “Number 2
Lane”, then the “Number 3 Lane”,
etc.
Example of numbered traffic lanes
Drive in the lane with the smoothest
flow of traffic. If you can choose
among three lanes, pick the middle
lane for the smoothest driving. To
drive faster, pass, or turn left, use
the left lane. When you choose to
drive slowly or enter or turn off the
road, use the right lane.
If there are only two lanes in your
direction, pick the right lane for the
smoothest driving.

What engine, Slant 6 or 318 V8 ?

The Plymouth Scamp was the sister car to the Dodge Dart Swinger, correct ? I had a 1972 Dodge Dart Swinger, yellow with black vinyl roof.

Well if they have realistic speed limits, people will generally go the realistic speed, with only some exceptions.
On many roads, the realistic speed is 65-75, and that's what most people go. It's not like if they raised it to 65 or 70 all of a sudden people will start going 85.
Everyone passes someone in NY when they are in fact going the speed limit because 55 is a completely unrealistic speed limit.

I don't think people in California necessarily drive faster on your freeways, people just drive faster LEGALLY. Most people on the Long Island Expressway when there's no traffic drive about 70-75 at least, even though the speed limit is stupidly 55. I don't remember going much faster on LA's Freeways, even though I believe the speed limit was 65.

It's asinine. Not only should they be the same for the most part, as the same roads when they leave NYC, they should be 65. 55 is ridiculous outside NYC, and 50 is utterly ridiculous in NYC too. Except perhaps the JR Parkway of course.

Some NYC highways in addition to the Jackie Robinson deserve their lower speed limits because of curves, narrow lanes, and or uneven pavement.

Just to name a few, 50 is reasonable for the BQE, parts of the Bruckner, much of the Bronx River, and the Henry Hudson; 45 is reasonable for the FDR.

I can think of two situations that should have gotten me killed.

Back in the early 70's I buried the needle on my 67 Cougar(120 mph)on that nifty straight strech on the Belt pky between Pennsylvania Ave & Cross Bay Blvd

And back in the early 80's I buried the needle on the Clearview Expy at 2:am in my AMC (American made crap) Pacer.

Im lucky to be alive to remember that riding in that fishbowl.

Haven't seen any of them on the road in a long time BTW.

118 MPH? That's it?? Or is that as fast as the thing would go?

Yeah, it's a frigging 1.8L Ford Focus Wagon. The only reason I even hit speeds that high in it was because I was going down a hill in a rush to get the car back to the airport. If it wasn't for that, I would have maxed out at less exiting speed of 111 (180 km/h). If I had the choice, I probably would have aimed for at least the mythical 200 km/h mark (roughly 125 mph) and 250 km/h (155 mph) with enough clearance and power.

Manual or Automatic for the autobahn?

Automatic with Ford's version of a Tiptronic. In theory, I could have taken a manual, but I'd prefer to learn how to drive a manual car before going on the autobahn.

It is asinine but the Belt is certainly not designed for speeds above 50. The Belt and JRP were envisioned for leisurely drives.

55 on the Interboro - OOOHHHH

65 mph on the Interboro. I think I need to try late at night in the Celica for when I can apex the turns and aim for 75...
