New York is very stingy with its speed limits. Why is the speed limit on NYC freeways only 50 and not 55? It doesn't make sense.

In NJ they seem to be more liberal with this. The speed limit on I-280 hits 65 pretty much as soon as you leave East Orange. This is the functional equivalent of the LIE hitting 65 after crossing the Van Wyck, or maybe at the Queens/Nassau border.
