Re: The Jewish Woman Shortage

Unfortunately, I think it has to be very hard for inter Jewish-Christian marriages. Even if both parties are not religious. So many of the holidays, secular or religious revolve around religion.
One of my friends (not a close friend in this case, but a friend just the same) married a Jewish girl, and they get along great. probably because neither are particularly religious, although both their families are, but they got by all that okay. They have been through a couple of rifts though.
The hardest probably was when she became pregnant. Neither is religious however, when it was found out that the baby would be a son, they came up with a real problem. What to raise the baby as. His parents are Italian Catholics (he was even born in Italy), and her's are Jewish (reform I believe).
They had to decide if he would even have a bris. Doesn't sound like a big deal, but the father apparently isn't even circumcised, and he felt no reason to have the son done. It doesn't sound like a hard decision, but the really had a hell of a time with the whole thing. But the kid is going to be raised Jewish, so we all went to a bris reception.....
It's about 5 years later, and they are all still doing good, and the families have become closer and closer. At the beginning it was hard, but everyone is adjusting.

It's hard enough if you have a non-religious Christian marrying a religious Christian, or a religious Jew marrying a a Conservative Jew, but when you start mixing the two you take a hard situation and make it harder.

My current girlfriend dated a Jewish guy before me. They didn't break up because of that, but she said it was always the hardest around the holidays, whether it be hers or his.
