That is true. The only part that got me was that it was a known issue but you are right because if it was a known issue they should have been triple checking it, and they didn't. Delta & SkyWest should be lucky that no one was killed or injured.Airtran was ValueJet BTW. Southwest just announced they are buying AirTran. |

How much more money is that going to cost in the long run, and not save?Of course, the whole ball of wax is solved with a short stretch of electrification to Bay Head. Why is it that NJT could find all sorts of money to overspend on HBLR but no money for a mere 18 miles of electrification from Long Branch to Bay Head . . . ?? Eighteen miles. (Then again, finding money for electrifying the 20 or so miles between Great Notch and Denville, big problem too, but not finding the money for these $12-million-per-unit ALP-45DPs. What an infernal joke.) |

One of his seeming hallmarks was multiple logos on trains . . . even though that did happen before him at Amtrak; but he added a third, the "lava lamp" scheme, due to his crazy idea to turn all NEC trains into some sort of "Acela", whether "Acela Regional" or "Acela Commuter" (remember that last one? the Clockers' new name for ten seconds) . . . |

Instead of all trains from Manhattan ending in Dover, some can originate in Hackettstown and use the same slot as an existing train. Ditto for the NJCL. Of course, without any new tunnel they cannot actually add more trains, which means current diesel only lines are screwed. |

Electrifying the Boonton line west of MSU makes no sense, it sees less than 10 trains per day and none on weekends. The RVL, OTOH is heavily used and has a schedule that would make electrification worthwhile. |

Electrifying the Boonton line west of MSU makes no sense, it sees less than 10 trains per day and none on weekendsMakes sense based on population density. The Gladstone Branch has far lower population and is still electrified, as well as being a dead end. Furthermore, it would be a very useful express route to Dover now that it serves Newark Broad. The RVL, OTOH is heavily used and has a schedule that would make electrification worthwhile They'll never, ever electrify it though. |

Speaking of DVARP, here's their dual-mode dream page from way back in 1998. The DVARP head guy is most definitely all about the ALP-45DP in spite of its costs; and I don't think that they envisioned a catenary dual-mode to have been three times the cost of a regular locomotive back then. |

If that wye was built so train would not have to change ends or directions, which of course comes with a time delay, I think the ACL Amtrak service be a bit more profitable. No need to incur any delays to change ends, do brake tests, and then be off on your way, as the dispatcher decides to get you out fast, or stick it to you for the sake of other trains. |

When I see the connections from New York come in on Track 4, the RVL trains fill up when they were practically empty before those people got on. Using capital funds (money for Electrification or ALP45DPs) to finance an operating expense (additional service on any line) is about the worst possible decision a transit system (or any other organization) can make. Adding another train or two during the wee hours of the morning on the NEC would involve an allocation of funding at least two orders of magnitude smaller than the money spent on either the dual fails or any prospective electrification. |

No, because while NJT's management may not be the brightest on earth, the ALP45DPs being a prime example of that, they are not quite brain dead enough to apply one time capital funding to a service expansion that will require additional funding for every year going forward from that point. |

Unfortunately, NJT has the reputation of putting multilevels where they don't belong, like on the RVL, for example. For one year now, the RVL has been 100% multilevels, wasting them on off peak trains where only 2 or 3 cars are needed, while other lines (using normal cars) at the same time period have 6 or 8 cars open. |

Weekday trips, I have 38% NYPS, 49% NWK, 2% HOB, 11% Local.I'd say the local is an under-count. Some people just get and off riding several stations like it were a bus, and there is no way to count them accurately since headcounts are done the old-fashioned way, not by tickets turned in. From that, I'd say it is mainly a lower Manhattan downtown and Jersey Gold Coast market. The weekend trip I was on the Sunday of Labor Day weekend, the 10:38pm out of Newark, I took PATH there. It was pretty well loaded up before its New York connection came in, but when it did, not much changed. |
