Length is 48'6". Width about the same as PATH.

While PATH and IRT are of the same length, PATH cars have a 3' shorter wheel base, the same as CTA. CTA used to host CNSM and CAE interurbans, which were 55', but they had tapered ends.

I agree with you that there should be more MVM's on Staten Island, even if they are not at the SIR stations due to the design and lack of weather proof structures at many of the stations. I'd love a couple of machines in the Staten Island Mall, or at CSI, and other places.

I'm sorry but it does make sense to delay the purchase of brand new train cars for Staten Island (not because it is Staten Island, etc), since as I understand it simply because the current whole set of trains have been recently renovated, and brought up to good working order. Why for example renovate a house and add 3 brand new rooms - if a year later the very same house if going to be demolished - it is a waste of money.

I do not get the sense that the current cars (although "old" when everybody it seems to like new stuff) are breaking down every day leaving riders stranded, or contributing to accidents, or other mishaps. I'm not saying that the situation needs to be that dire in order to buy new cars, either.

I understand the role of politicians who would want sign on to an effort to get new train cars now, versus the political payoff occurring five years into the future - when they themselves might not benefit via the voters. So yes, some of the rhetoric might be over the top - but they are trying to play the role that they are assigned - cheer-leader for new stuff.

Just my thoughts.
Mike

Maybe the spare parts stream on an R46 is more like an R44 than the R68 is.
Wouldn't the engineers have to qualify on SMEE style controller and brake handle ?

To keep all the express bus routes and the free Ferry rides, seems like a very steep price. It really isn't worth it. imo.
If NJT feels they need to keep a few lines, then let them buy up the newest buses and give the rest back to the city to use.

Good point about the politicians. Since money for new cars simply does not exist, the politicians have nothing to lose by being in favor of new cars. It makes them look good to their constituents, even if nothing comes of it. It isn't as though they'll ever have to vote for such a thing any time soon.

But how is $.50 'expensive'? I think the reason it was dropped was because Guiliani was up for re-election and wanted the GOP vote from SI. Otherwise if they were to charge at minimum $.50 that can at least pay parts of the costs to operate the ferries.

The actual reason for the free ferry fare was because the metrocards only allow for one intra system transfer and a free fare would require 2 intra system transfers which metrocards cannot do.

When the R-44s went there, the engineers had to qualify on the original R-44 type slide controller and then requalify on the cinestons after GOH. I'm also sure that there are still some SIRT engineers who operated the original MUs and also the LIRR cars that were lent there in the 1970s.

In addition, folks just have to understand that the last ferry fare at 50 cents -- was no way close to the cost of the actual service provided. At the time about 1997 the whole ferry operation was about 50 million a year, and the total fare collected from the from riders was 2 million dollars. Gee, like that amount (although size-able) is really not going to be making any differences concerning service levels, etc.

Yes, the real reason behind the removal of the ferry fare was Mayor Rudy G., the new MetroCard system, and his idea of "one city-one fare". The costs of providing new turnstyles at the ferry terminals was going to be higher than the amount of revenue brought in. This is also the same argument about the Staten Island Railway, and was further proved with the building of a new fare building that costs ten times more than the fare amount that will be collected over the next ten years. But some folks still won't shut up about it.

And to top it off, the ferry fare charged the riders was not going to make any difference, because somebody had the decency to burn down the Manhattan ferry terminal in 1991 - starting the almost 2 decades of temporary terminals and various adjustments to the loss of the terminal, the construction and reconstruction of the two terminals, and the various adjustments that had to be made at the ferry terminals, subway stations, the areas around the terminals, the provisions for new security, new security details and personnel, etc. In addition during this period - the acquisition of three new ferries, and removal of two of the oldest boats. Add in the accident at the ferry terminal that cost 11 lives, injured scores, where a few folks went to jail - and the adjustments and the aftermath of that incident. Now the whole ferry operation costs about 80 million a year - especially due to the new security and staffing arrangements needed after 9/11, and the accident. And through all of this the basic ferry schedule remained the same - at times very in-adequate, until about a few years ago, the addition of some morning weekend boats and a few weeknight midnight hour runs. The first major change in the basic schedule after about 35 years. It was a compromise since Mayor Bloomberg vetoed a unanimous City Council vote to have boat service at no more than than 30 minutes apart 24/7/365 - forever killing the hated hourly ferries.

There's no way that the amount of money coming from the fare box for the Staten Island Ferry was going to have any effect upon any of those happenings. The ferry fare is simply a "mac-guffin" - something to rile up the folks who simply do not understand.

Mike

I don't think that was the reason. Since the introduction of MetroCard gold and its bus/subway free transfers, SIers have had three swipes for one fare. One for a bus to the SIR, one to get out the SIR at St. George and another one to ride the subway or bus at South Ferry. It was all part of the Giulliani's one fare for anywhere in the city plan. The ferry fare was eliminated as part of it as well.

I think the dispute there was that the MTA would then have to put out their share and have the overnight SI local bus lines and SIR run every 30 minutes too. That would help though, because I was on the 130am ferry last night and every bus leaving St. George at 2am was absolutely packed front to back. And the S53 is always like that overnight too, especially during the summer.

During all times of SIR operation, the SIR trains attempt to meet the Manhattan bound and the arriving Staten Island ferries. During the rush hours there are additional trains that arrive "between the boats".

During the regular day and nights, when the boats on every half-hour -- the trains run every half-hour. During the midnight hours the SIR trains run once an hour just like the ferries.

However on Saturday and Sunday nights when after 7pm or 7:30pm until when the boats run every hour, the SIR trains run every half-hour until about 10pm or so. This is similar to the time when on weekend mornings the boats ran once every hour, and the trains were every half-hour. Now since the boats start running every half-hour so do the SIR trains on the weekends.

Of course this refers to the posted schedule - real world experience may be different. Hope this helps.

Mike

I am sorry but that sounds so wrong. There still are safety issues to be addressed by any inspection, doubtful the city would open themselves up to that kind of liability. As one mentioned and I believe him to be correct it was a part of Guliani's 1 city 1 fare program

Because it would have added an additional charge onto the initial fare paid on a SI bus.

Then that sound like it should also be used by passengers who need to use 2 buses to get to a subway line !!!

That works too: On LI Bus, on the Q79 and on Staten Island. AFAIK, all other buses connect to at least one subway line.
