I know....it was always only a few tracks that were electrified in the LIC yard....on the one side. The recent photos I found on the net confirmed what I remembered.
I never said the whole yard was electirfied, but there are a few electrified tracks on one side of the yard.

I assume that's north of the LIC station platform, which would explain why I never noticed any third rail when I was there.

This is a good overview shot.

The right of fence/northern side tracks lead to the Main Line.

The switches partially seen in the foreground are what a Main Line EMU train uses to cross over to the electrified south side tracks. Notice the 'kickers' to help out on the switching move.

The one thing that I'm not sure of is whether this is block operation or not.

Yes, but no one ever said the station tracks were electrified. The station is in the yard. The tracks on one side of the yard are electrified. Electrification comes INTO the yard, even if not on all tracks.

There's a photo of an M7 on one of the tracks IN the yard. A few tracks on one side of the yard are electrified, and always were. I didn't say the tracks they use for the station platform are electrified. The station uses yard tracks. The original station was just a concrete area in the middle of the yard.

Sigh. We've been through this before.

Rules of war only apply in a war. A group of people with no association to any state that want to blow things up is, fundamentally, a criminal organisation, similar to the mafia.

Your talk about releasing them "when the conflict is over" is ignorant and best and sheer propaganda at worst. The "conflict" is between us and an ever-changing bunch of private individuals who don't like us— the "conflict" will never be over. This is not a "war" that will be over in a few years with a negotiated peace treaty.

Your talk about the US acting in a "humane and responsible" manner is equally somewhere between ignorant and propaganda. I'd love to hear how you consider the worst and most capricious torture "humane and responsible," especially after some 100-odd people have died as a direct result of it.

And for the record, JFK airport is not a "battlefield." You might also want to explain how a busy NYC airport is a "battlefield" and a Canadian on his way home from vacation is an "enemy combatant."

This is not the America you're used to, Lion, and no amount of denial is going to change that.

There wasn't much of a platform there in the 90's...I have a few photos "somewhere", but all it was was a concrete slab right in the middle of the yard, that had arrows where you would cross over the other tracks till you got to the side, where there was a little shed:

Here's a photo I took in 1994....when entering the station on westbound trains, they usually didn't use this track, but a track in the middle of the yard, but this shed was on the side, I guess maybe for people waiting in the afternoon for eastbounds.

All those tracks combine at the bottom though. Before the high level platform, that fence in the middle of the yard wasn't there either. The old station shed, in my other post

used to be on the far right if looking at the current photo:

There was a low level platform concrete slab about where the high level platform is now, and you used to just walk across the tracks on a concrete pathway across other tracks, when the train came in in the morning. Notice there are a few concrete "platforms" even in the current photo. The trains I usually came into are the one in the middle, which is now on the "wrong" side of the fence that is there now, but has two trains along it. Those were used until 1998.

Agreed.

Wrong. Terrorists are not mobsters. Mobsters do not exist to carry on a struggle for a political purpose. And they do not engage in acts of violence against a state, unless said state is in Sicily.

Perhaps we need a new Hague convention to define how we treat enemy combatants. But don't act as if they have any rights as of now. No Geneva/Hague convention protocol anywhere demands that terrorists not fighting for a state in a conventional war be treated in any particular manner.

The current platform sits above an asphault slab between two tracks. Even the old lighting on this slab is still intact. I'm not sure where this shed you photographed was in relation to the current entrance to the high level platform. Perhaps near where there's that (usually open) fence near Borden Ave.

There are existing Yuppies else where in LIC that don't act like selfish morrons like these do. We are looking west toward the city, the locomotives are pointed east to Long Island. On the right (north) are the LIC Platforms sans any third rails. Then there is a fence. To the left (south) are more yard tracks, and they all have third rails.

IAWTP. There is a new homeowner here in Bay Ridge, Bkln who purchased a home directly across the street from the American Legion post. Since he moved in, he has done nothing but complain about the noise on Saturday night from the party guests who hire its party facility. The post structure has been in its present location since 1939 and nobody including the residents who line adjacent to the post on the same side of the street ever complained for all the years that the post has been there. Now this individual had to have been either absolutely blind or brain dead not to realize that the presence of any type of social club such as a K of C, or veteran's organization etc would not necessarily be the quietest place in the world yet he chose to buy a home there. As far as I'm concerned, he and others like him have no gripe whatsoever since they either knew or should have known the drawbacks of living in such a location.

So the mob never blew anything up? Never killed anyone?

We can argue technicalities without ever seeing eye to eye; I think the main dispute is one of purpose. I think that locking up, torturing, and killing innocent people is a bad thing, and the existence of some people somewhere who want to blow things up doesn't justify it. To that end, we need to make sure that the people we lock up are, in fact, guilty of whatever it is they're accused of— and confessions coerced through torture, the president or CIA's say-so, or the word of a bounty hunter paid for each person he hands over regardless of what they did or who they are don't count.

"Enemy combatant" is a meaningless term made up for political purposes. If we're fighting an old-fashioned war, then enemy soldiers captured are prisoners of war, subject to the protection of the Geneva conventions. Anyone else accused of wrongdoing is an accused criminal, subject to the protections of US law (ie, the Constitution).

By the way, you're free to explain how a Canadian on his way home from vacation is an "enemy combatant," if you want.

I'd also like to hear why, exactly, you trust the government with the absolute power to declare anybody an "enemy combatant" and imprison them with no oversight and no need to explain their actions.

Yes, but that fence used to not be there. Many of those tracks used to be "the station", back with the old diesels. It's only recently that they only use those two right most tracks for the "station". We would often get off way in the middle of the yard on one of the many low level platforms that were there. They didn't change the tracks.

As I noted here, this is not a left versus right issue, and I discussed at some length the analysis given by the man who is now probably the most leftwards leaning federal appellate judge in the eastern half of the country, which has become the standard for the entire, very influential, law and economics movement.

So I do not see how Chris R27's comment is correct. All politics is local, as a fat and very successful politician from Boston once said. Regardless of whether you're a Republican, Democrat, Libertarian, Communist, of Free Marijuana Party man, you know what you need to do to secure the favor of these people.

I again also question why this topic has devolved somehow into a freewheeling debate between Nilet and Broadway Lion of things that have nothing to do with the issue on Borden Av.

IAWTP. Mr. Schneck and Mr. Thienpont should continue this thread via email.

(Oh, and FWIW, a one-dimensional "left/right" spectral axis is such a foolishly simplified way of classifying political ideology that it leads to threads like this. :-) )

I agree. I don't know why Chris has to bring up Obama on an issue with a train yard. The political beliefs of the people who are complaining about the train yard are completely irrelevant to this issue.

No, the old powerhouse is a block away from the station and is now another condo of its own.

BECAUSE!

Without such interesting input the thread would simply wither away into oblivion. Now it can go down fighting taking those leftist-liberal-communist-whippersnappers with them.

Nilet and I are going to go over to the donut shop at Newkirk Avenue and discuss some important stuff, such as when the flecked green paint was applied to the inside of the BMT Standards.

You would have jumped right in and said "YEAH" however, if the criticism was about our former president, Bush.

Great, another condo built on a former industrial site near the trainyard, and can now complain about it too....
