I've been meaning to ask this about MP54's for some time now. And R33/36 reminded me of it. Its the sounds. We often visited my Dad's uncle in Copiague. His place had the tacks - then at grade level- right in the back yard. Yes, the motors groaned like an R1/9 for example, but i guess that makes sense that the technology at the time included pinion gears and not spiral cut ones. But, a more distant memory for me was the whistle. It was not like a diesel whistle, nor was it like the subsequent M1 whistle. Does anyone recall? What other equipment had that sort of sound. If I had to say it resembled another whistle, I'd say it was like a steam locomotive....but different... |

Click here for list.Included in this total are three from the LIRR and nine from the PRR; the NYC never used MP-54's but rather had their own heavyweight MU cars built over a period of years to several different designs. There are a LOT of ex-DL&W/ex-NJT heavyweight "Edison cars" preserved, though most of them are used as locomotive-hauled coaches nowadays and not preserved as electric cars. See Preserved Electric Railway Cars for more information. Frank Hicks |

The "MP" designation was strictly Pennsy nomenclature descrbing the car as a Motor Passenger car with a 54 ft long passenger compartment excluding the end vestibules. Thus the Newark extension cars (Mc Adoos) which belonged to the PRR and not the H & M were designated MP41 and the PRR counterparts of the H & M K cars were designated MP51 since the entire car was available to passengers since they lacked vestibules. |

Not the later models with bigger collision posts though. The cars were built well...only an extra 500 pounds of STEEL to fuse solid collision posts to the solid frame, and they would probably surpass all FRA collision standards. |

The memories I mentioned in Copaigue go back to when I was about 5 or 10, so 1956 - 1960 ish. But, As a grad student I began commuting on the LIRR in 1972 - Framingdale or Massapequa to NYP. At that time - and for about a year or so after that - they were still running non M1's MU's from NYP or Flatbush to the W. Hempstead branch, the latter still, presumably, having low platforms. So, I would arrange my schedule to get an old train (grey and that orrange color scheme) between NYP and Jamaica. But, that didn't last long. I loved riding with opeanable windows.... |

The crashed through eacch other, perhaps, but I bet they would crash through an NJT Comet 5.I once saw a photo of a vintage pullman car that tore halfway through a new bi level car. And i saw a pic of a triplex after it collided with another triplex, and it didn't crunch up easily, and in fact, it showed signs that it had thick metal where it counted. Maybe the MPs didn't have thick metal where it counted though. |

But there were also MP72s later. I never knew of them on any other railroad. Never liked them. They went on well into the '80s stripped of their MU equipment running as couches in diesel terratory... Seeing the wreckage from the February 1950 wreck at Rockville Center, which pitted MP-54A #1482 vs. MP-54C #1919, I would tend to politely disagree with you on this. These two collided corner-to-corner on a gantlet track, and basically disemboweled each other - a "half-telescope", if you will. MP-54s, despite their steel construction, collapsed fairly easily. An example of more rugged equipment would be the 1955-vintage MP-70s, also known as "Zips". I've seen a few accidents involving these (after their conversion from motors to diesel coaches), and collision damage was basically limited to the vestibule areas. i.e. #2704 and #2711 at Huntington - involved in a grade-crossing accident with a flatbed, which, incidentally, ripped the clamshell right off an M-1 which was taking a nap on the nearby layup track! wayne |

The demotored MP72s didn't retire until the late 90s. The GP38-2s that hauled them are still going as switchers on other railroads. If the LIRR had put some money into them (maybe even converted them and the Geeps to proper push-pull and HEP, using the MU cabs as push-pull cabs instead of wasting all sorts of fuel hauling around a dead-in-tow Alco or switcher) and maintained them over the years, they would have been more amenable. |

The pictures I have seen from the RVC wreck were from Newsday's archives. The DOT report supplied me the unit #s. These two cars, one from roughly 1910, the other from the mid-1920s, hit point-to-point. Both cars were split down-the-aisle, and everybody who was on the wrong side of the aisle died, 31 in all.The last batch of owl-eyes that were classified as MP-54s came in 1930. These were the 1135-1179 series and were designated MP-54A1c. They appeared to be very similar to earlier models, at least on the outside. wayne |

Don't remind me of how utterly bad these cars were at the end of 1999 and beginning of 2000. They were rolling ovens, stinking of urine and feces, and with collapsed seats.
