The demotored MP72s didn't retire until the late 90s. The GP38-2s that hauled them are still going as switchers on other railroads.If the LIRR had put some money into them (maybe even converted them and the Geeps to proper push-pull and HEP, using the MU cabs as push-pull cabs instead of wasting all sorts of fuel hauling around a dead-in-tow Alco or switcher) and maintained them over the years, they would have been more amenable. |
