I think its another Contract but if it was i think there would be some kind of press release out if it was a new contract. Thats just me thinking though.. They never mentioned how long the trains are supposed to be though in the "Option Order" and Kawasaki is picking this up. Its not a "crew room rumor" though, beacuse nobody really is talking about it. |

After all, they used to run MP72s on there . . .Even their BMT Standard cars had commuter rail-like (or interurban-like) seating. |

No, they are a railroad and are subject to the rules and regs of the FRA. Therefore, they're a railroad and other than maintenance issues can run M-7's on their tracks. |

I doubt that SIR will be connected to NYCT within the service life of any new M7 trainsets, but even that's not correct, I think one has to consider quite a few factors to see what kind of equipment would be preferable.First, since SIRT is FRA-regulated, there are standards to meet. Is there a difference in third-rail potential between SIR and MNCR/LIRR? (There certainly is between NYCT and the latter). What's the acceleration one wants to achieve? What's the top speed? What's the part of the line, if any, limiting train length? What's cost-effective given SIR needs? For another thing, perhaps SIR could just re-scale the new PA5 PATH cars. |

Also one other factor: the M7 cars seem very heavy, so weight's a concern too, as well as powering that bulk to move at speed from a dead stop. |

R-44s were tested on the LIRR, and IIRC there *were* problems with voltage differences.LIRR *used* to be 600v DC, but was upped to 750 when the M1s needed more power. DC traction motors are forgiving beasts, and can run on many different voltages without problems, but trying to run them to the max on a higher voltage seems to have been a problem. Maybe someone who had *truth* may tell the story better than I. ROAR |

The SIRT only has rapid transit cars on it because the MTA urgently needed to replace the ancient B&O cars running the on the SIRT and the R44s were seen as the quickest option at the time. I don't think there's any reason for them to change it up this late in the game though, as they can simply put R160-like cars on the line. That would further allow for the potential of expansion to the subway system. |
