Jail The Parents

Posted by Train Dude on Mon Oct 28 09:41:21 2024

So subway surfing has opened up to females. 2 of them, one just 11 years old fell from the roof of a #7 train at 111th St. One died and one is in critical condition. The post is reporting that this is the 6th death this year. That seems low considering how often we are discussing this. Another pre-teen died in Chicago this weekend - same story.

Now we can blame the MTA for not ending the practice. Granted, there are things that could be done but from my perspective the blame needs to be placed on the parents. How is an 11 year old, especially an 11 year old female, running the streets, unsupervised at that hour - at any hour? Where were the parents? Why are they not under arrest for child neglect?

I totally agree with you on this - and I will take it further in that to prevent relatives from filing lawsuits to claim money for the actions of those who put themselves in harms way figuring that the MTA has deep pockets for them to access - get the laws changed so that injuries sustained while committing a crime will not be compensated, period. Remove the financial incentive and the frivilous lawsuits will dry up.

These kids have zero structure and no family unit to guide them. This will continue until the parents are held responsible for these minors.

Placing blame belongs more in the Off Topic Chat.

You are blaming parents. Does society provide the time for parents to supervise their children as it used to? Until the 1970's, a single wage earner in a family could provide for the family. This permitted the other parent to supervise their children.

That changed as working class incomes declined relative to the cost of living. The result was that both parents worked or suffered a drastic decline in living standards. This resulted in a decline to a total absence of parental supervision of their children's free time.

As mentioned above, this is more complex than placing immediate blame.

"Does society provide the time for parents to supervise their children as it used to? "

Its the parents role to find the time for or arrange supervision. I know of plenty households where both parents work and their kids dont ride the tops of subway cars. You cant just blow it off to "society"

"...a drastic decline in living standards."

You forgot the drastic decline of the family as a unit and of family values and responsibilities. Generally due to the increase of single parent households.

"As mentioned above, this is more complex than placing immediate blame."

The tone of your post seems to imply for these kids geting a pass

If a kid is caught surfing they should fine the parents watch how fast that stops..

Accountability is a word that’s passed around like a cigarette these days it seems..

Always somebody else’s fault..

No,Stephen is right. And as to TD's comment about an 11 year olds. The summer I was 11 I spent a month at my grandfather's home in Chicago. That was the year I explored major parts of the L. CTA 6000s had a 'railfan' seat opposite the motorman's cab. (correct title in the early 50s) between sitting there and standing staring out the wndow in the end door, I rode all over. The deal was, be home in time for dinner. On my own,no one bothered me, and I got to experience the Garfield Park L on the at grade level as the Congress Expressway was being built.

As to the lack of parental guidance, indeed Off Topic.

For starters, we need parents actually interested in their kids. The idiot mother on transit ignoring the kids while texting... is emblematic of way too many people who should never have given birth.

Proper child raising includes taking the kids on trains, streetcars, . Several of my "god children" had early experiences of steam excursions.
More recently, I took a 10 year old neighbor kid for a ride on BART, Amtrak Capitol Corridor, VTA LR, and BART back home. He got to experience eating a pizza in the cafe car. He will not be out 'surfing' on BART.

Well by all means.if you believe that thread about activities on a subway should be on the OT board, then move it there. If you see something, do something.

People like telling this story but it isn’t true. Women entered the workforce not because they had to but because they wanted to.

Yes, they wanted in, BUT, they got (still get) crappy wages. The bigger issue was that the major inflation of the 70s meant that it became necessary to have two incomes to afford being a family.

This girl was 15 years old which makes it even more sad because no way a 15 year old girl should be out at 2300 hours… Now her parents have to bury her and as for her freind? She may join her in the afterlife and for what? Foolishness..

Around 111st on the Flushing Line is a bad spot for subway surfers. IIRC there are low hanging girders supporting the flyover express track making for tight clearances between the car and superstructure, peeling off anyone on a car roof.

I agree. Sadly, the parents will not look to themselves for the loss of their child. They'll seek to stethoscope with deep pockets - the taxpayers because someone didn't do the job the parent should have done. What's the use? Stupid kids will do stupid things and negligent parents will cry and sue. The beat goes on

A similar complain dates back to Greece in the Fifth Century BC. Child rearing is both the most important and most difficult task humans undertake.

No, TNHIW. Most (admittedly, not all) of the wage gap is attributable to women’s career choices.

Most dual income families live a life of greater luxury than people in the 50s did, and I’m not talking about technological change.
