I thought the R-46s rode pretty well with the Rockwell trucks back in 1978. Even their original speedometers worked in those days.

Yeah they were in some sort of weird way.

But..they DID SOUND as if they were about to fall apart...

I still find it incredible that they ran them in a regulated"MODE" of 65MPH...[65MPH!] on the E/F/N lines where able.

The WORST was the Q.B EXPRESS between Roosevelt and Queens Plaza citybound.

Felt like you were going 90!..

Paired with that hard braking for the turn onto Northern Blvd...it was one cool but scary ride.

Too bad the rear ender at 5th ave..and all the others put an end to the "RAPID" in rapid transit.

The 38's sounded identical to the 40/42. The brake sound and even the compressors. It was surprising to me, because of the fact that the body shape was clearly closer to the old style, with the exception of being stainless steel.
Of course, if you want to still hear that, then take the PATH (although those are mixed with the newer R62 type brake sound on the newer cars).
Perhaps in order to restore that sound on a museum 40, they could take theequipment off the PA1-3 whenever those are retired in a few years.

The R-32GE would be perfect, the original bulkhead is still present.

Actually you could take one of the A-A sets of the R-46. If you wanted an R-44, get an R-44SI pair. If I am not mistaken, those are capable of running as an A-A set. Another plus is that they have stainless sides, much less mileage, and abuse.

I'd love for them to take several pairs of all the married pairs; leave one car in current state, and restore the other to the original state. For the 32's; one pair would be from 3350-3799; and the other would be one of the GE's, (except the 3500 pair in there), so that both versions of the original R-32, as well as both versions of the current would be represented. For the 38's, you would have one pair from 3950-4139, and then one frm 4140-4149, since those originally had A/C. The same with the slants. One pair non/A/C; the other A/C. The 40m and 42 would only need one pair each.
That would only be 16 cars. The doors would be restored as well, though on the 32 and 38, putting contact or whatever over the stainless steel would suffice. (there is one 32 out there I've had a few times that had some sort of gray contact or pain on one of the end doors, though it is mostly peeled off). The only thing missing would be those wider rubber things on the bottom of the side doors.
It's the 40's and 42's where the doors have smaler windows, and are basically the same used on the 32's and 38's. I would say take out the stainless steel and put in whatever was used on some of the redbirds (some of the side doors were basically new, but were some red material--looked like formica, and not stainless steel, of course.
Put back in the center lights as well.

But all of this is a pipe dream. They could not even put back the original type windows (saved from reef cars) on that mixed IRT museum train. Killed it for me; because those new windows were made to emulate the R-33 and afterward "European" windows, and what I liked about the IRT was that they were not taken over by those like the BMT/IND was. So ugh! Those A/C units would kill the IRT experience for me as well, and I bet they didn't even repaint the insides, right?

Did the 38's sound similar to what they sound like today? Did the motors and brakes sound the same? I never rode in any pre GOH trains (my first subway ride was in late 1990).

Nope, those painted redbirds used on MOD trips had unaltered interiors. A bit odd being on a silver/blue train and being unable to distinguish it from a regular resbird.

No. The R38 (I'll take your word for it), R40 and R42 had a Darth Vader exhaling type sound. The R10/16/27/30/32 all sounded like an R36WF SMEE. The R46 had a whistle sound. Only the R44 retains something very close to the kind of brake noise they made prior to GOH.

I had .wav files of an R42, but my computer crash wiped them out.

The Rockwell trucks were very smooth riding from the time of delivery until they were replaced due to cracks developing in them. Made a cool clack-clack sound during baking too!

No, the 38's use what I referred to as the "modern R-62 style sound".

Nooooooooooooooooooo! :(

If you want to kinda hear the Darth Vader, watch the movie "Coming to America", near the end, when Eddie Murphy rides a pre-GOH R-38 on the E (supposed to be at Sutphin Blvd, but they actually used the closed platform at Hoyt-Schermerhorn!). Watch fro the scene where he gives a lady who had just gotten off the train a pair of expensive diamond earrings. Just before the doors close you can maybe hear (if you turn your volume up high) the brakes releasing. There was some other movie I saw recently on cable where the characters boarded an R-42 N at 57/7 (apparently it was shot in the 70s) and you hear the DV very clearly, but I have no idea which movie it was, as I didn't stick around after that scene (it was not the French Connection).
