The 38's sounded identical to the 40/42. The brake sound and even the compressors. It was surprising to me, because of the fact that the body shape was clearly closer to the old style, with the exception of being stainless steel.
Of course, if you want to still hear that, then take the PATH (although those are mixed with the newer R62 type brake sound on the newer cars).
Perhaps in order to restore that sound on a museum 40, they could take theequipment off the PA1-3 whenever those are retired in a few years.
