When I lived on 68th Ave I'd go down to Farmers oval on 65th pl and head twards the BMT ROW and from the street side watch the BMT standards head to Metropolitan Avemake that curve and being a bit below the rail head made for some great photos,no other train came even close to that feeling of power,I wish I kept those photos, also at the end of Farmers oval in the ball field was a steep slope heading down to the RRtracks accross from that tower, we used to dig rocks out from that sloped hill while watching the GG1'S fly by this was around 1957 or so. It goes from the street level to the roof--which is already connected by the escalator.
When I was suggesting they build a connection DOWN; I was told that they couldn't cut throught the floors. Yet they did that to build going UP. go figure. Their loss, as I used to head straight over to Waldbaums every payday, but soon that went out of business, as did Pergament, and it took a few years for the new stores to move in, and by that time; I was shopping elsewhere. It was really dead down there for awhile, and that must have meant loss of money for the the landlords (Rentar).
Now I'm sugesting a glass elevator on the outside of the back of the building, from near Burger King, to the roof, which would put it near the food court at the top of the driving ramp.

I can't believe they can't build some sort of way up and down inside from the street level stores to the lower level stores. But as you said, it's their loss.
The real problem is that it does inhibit people from really using the place, it a very inconvenient dumb building. The truth is though that as designed, the building wasn't meant to have true retail on the lower level like it does now. It was basically supposed to be sort of industrial down there (warehouse-like) while the street level was to have stores, and then parking on the roof. The obsolesence came into effect when they made the lower level a true retail area, and then it really wasn't properly designed to connect with the street levell stores, or the roof parking.

Robert Hall left there because the chain died. TSS left there when the TSS chain died. Caldor died with the rest of the entire chain too. The entire K-Mart chain almost faced a similar fate. It seems whatever store goes in there dies (but not just at that location, all the locations).

I even suggested using Stairway G, (which goes up from right between Sam Goody and Conway (formerly Pergament), and comes up way in the back of the K-Mart/Caldor stock area. I was hoping that K-Mart would use that space for retail, and then it would be more feasible, but they kept it as it was. Likewise, Stairway H goes right from the middle of K-Mart down to the middle of Levitz. Anyway, the owners told me that the fire dept. wouldn't allow it because they only emergency exits. I've never seen the actual staircases, but if they had a big enough shaft (as some do), then perhaps a small cage type elevator could be put in the middle, while the actual stairs are still gated off. But they are probably narrow and don't have any such space.

Yes, it was originally indistrial, and the retail was a later addition. When I first came to the area, Levitz wasn't there, and you had partially paved over tracks going up to the building in that area!
There are vast sections of the building being used for other things, including a warehouse and police academy (when you see oll those cadets ont he train, that is where they are coming from/going). This is part of what makes it so hard to connect the two levels. The old rampalator (or whatever) and now the new escalators it was replaced with is so long, because there is an entire floor between the street level and the roof. Then all the space on the street level behind Toys R. us and directly above the lower mall, and the other two floors above that. (part of this is the docking area for both stores, but the rest of it is the academy; I believe).

Yes, where Levitz is was once Macy's warehouse. I don't know if that was open to the public or not. The train used to actually go DIRECTLY into the building there. The tracks went up to a huge rollup door, and that would be opened to let the entire train into the building. I have seen photos of LIRR MP15's coming out of the building after dropping frieght cars into it.

The building is HUGE. Like you said there is so much space.
