Continental Avenue was the original street name of what is now commonly referred to as 71st Avenue. Queens roads used to have names, before the vast majority were changed over to numbers in the early 20th Century.

In the case of Continental Avenue, residents of Forest Hills opted to keep Continental Avenue around in spirit, even after it was renamed to 71st Avenue, and the DOT opted to include Continental as a secondary name for the street, for a two block area in a busy shopping district in Forest Hills. For those two blocks, there are two street signs, one on top of the other, with one proclaiming 71st Avenue, and the other proclaiming Continental Avenue.

Subway stations, historically, have kept old street names in their signage, so that's where you get 71 - Continental Av - Forest Hills from.

In recent years, the subway map has sought to reduce station name clutter, and maintain neighborhoods in select stations (especially terminals), so the station became Forest Hills - 71 Avenue.

Internally at New York City Transit, the station, its offices, and and its crew room and crew reporting center are referred to as Continental. Because Transit loves keeping things old school internally.
