That's because it basically is considered "foreign" here, they don't need to make it "seem" like that.

I remember going to games at Metropolitan Oval. Most of the adults spoke Italian or German, or Yugoslavian(in later years).

Whenever I was on an M train leaving Fresh Pond going to Met in the summer, I always observed that soccer had taken over the park.

Actually, that's not Metropolitan Oval, that's Farmer's Oval, if I am not mistaken. Isn't Metropolitan Oval the soccer field in Mapeth, next to the NY Connecting RR tracks, just north west of where Forest Ave and Metro Ave meet? That's the soccer field my friend used to play at when we were kids:

It's never good to watch a baseball game in the middle of a huge football stadium. The stadium is even large for football. The sidelines of the football field are also much farther from the seats than other football stadiums I have been in. The baseball field is completely lost in the field of that stadium.

Golf no. There is no doubt golf is mainstream in this country. But not necessarily because people like to watch it, but because many like to play it. In fact, it's more popular than ever. It probably is more mainstream to watch though though too than soccer is. Tiger Woods has done wonders for that (although he may have done wonders to twart it too, lol). Tennis? probably also more mainsteam than soccer, but still a lesser sport. People tune in to watch the Williams sisters, or years ago when Sampras or Agassi used to play, or the Jensen brothers when they used to play, but it's not something that holds the country like football, baseball, or basketball here. I used to go to the US Open a lot in the 90's when I used to get free tickets from a cousin I had that played in the open from Europe. Most of the audience were rich older people, or "foreigners".
Boxing? It's gone down and down in popularity. I think it was much more popular decades past.

I think that you underestimate how many Americans (immigrant or not) like soccer and overestimate the rest of the world. Soccer is the most popular sport in the world, but it's not the most popular sport in many countries. For example:

China - table tennis
Japan - baseball, sumo
Canada, Russia(?) - hockey
Croatia - basketball(?)
India, Pakistan, much of the Caribbean - cricket
South Africa, Ireland(?), New Zealand(?) - rugby

Isn't speed skating almost as popular in the Netherlands as soccer or is that somewhere else? Norway?

That new Red Bull Arena over in Harrison seats all of 25,000 people and their Venezuelas. It is right in the middle of the so called "hot bed" of American soccer - New York City, Newark, Kearny, Union City, and the surrounding areas. 25,000 capacity. College soccer draws tens of people to the NCAA Division 1 Championship game. Of course, the teams are usually Philadelphia Textile against Indiana University - Purdue University Fort Wayne. I'm sorry but soccer is a joke. B7 soccer from the American pitch above the high school level.

That doesn't prove anything though. Americans love both Baseball and Football. Many Americans are fanatical about both. Doesn't lessen the fact that those two are still the most popular US sports.

And Canada is most definitely hockey. They like American Football more than most other countries too. I never considered Canada a big "soccer" country either.

And whether the Netherlands has speed skating as more popular than soccer (which I can't verify, it may or may not be true), they are still quite fanatical about Soccer. I was there when the late 90's World Cup was going on.

Most just think it's a funny sport, no different than Europeans (and other Soccer countries) that find American football hilarious. They aren't "scared" of it either. As I said somewhere else here, my European relatives think NFL is hilarious. They already think that Americans are fat pigs, and aren't afraid to let that be known, and that NFL football is a bunch of fat American pigs running around, which fits right into their stereotype of how they feel about Americans.

Yeah. Those pilots need to turn around and go someplace else. The storms down there are up to 50,000'. I am sure the passengers are frightened...

Yeah, well to accommodate the baseball field, the stands had to be moved back. After the Marlins leave in 2012, plans are to move the stands back in to make it a more intimate setting.

For some reason, I don't think they'll be serving food and beverage tonight.

Pilots are reporting turbulence.

I'm going up to the airport in a few.

Golf no. There is no doubt golf is mainstream in this country. But not necessarily because people like to watch it, but because many like to play it. In fact, it's more popular than ever. It probably is more mainstream to watch though though too than soccer is.

Wrong on both counts. If you go by participation rates, soccer blows golf away. If you go by TV viewership rates of big events for both sports, soccer still blows golf away.

The Slovenia game (a mere First Round match played early in the morning on a weekday) blew away the ratings of anything golf. It destroyed Stanley Cup ratings (which were in primetime) and is right up there with NBA Finals ratings (also in primetime). Of course many people (like me) watched both the WC Game and the NBA Game 7.

I used to go to the US Open a lot in the 90's when I used to get free tickets from a cousin I had that played in the open from Europe. Most of the audience were rich older people, or "foreigners".

That's because the tickets are very expensive for ordinary plebes.

Boxing? It's gone down and down in popularity. I think it was much more popular decades past.

That's true.

My relatives in Europe laugh their asses off at NFL Football, calling them a bunch of fat American pigs walking on the field.

They are just ribbing you because you are there. They probably don't give two shits about American football one way or the other. If I had a relative from Pakistan or India, I would probably make fun of cricket or field hockey just for the hell of it even though I have no opinion of those sports and since I like baseball, I would actually probably actually like cricket.

Speaking of NBA Game 7, it did a record rating.

Boxing PPV's do big business in the US, but UFC on average is bigger. In Mexico, boxing is still doing well on free tv. Sometimes it beats most soccer games.
