There is no doubt golf is mainstream in this country. But not necessarily because people like to watch it, but because many like to play it. In fact, it's more popular than ever. It probably is more mainstream to watch though though too than soccer is. Tiger Woods has done wonders for that (although he may have done wonders to twart it too, lol). Tennis? probably also more mainsteam than soccer, but still a lesser sport. People tune in to watch the Williams sisters, or years ago when Sampras or Agassi used to play, or the Jensen brothers when they used to play, but it's not something that holds the country like football, baseball, or basketball here. I used to go to the US Open a lot in the 90's when I used to get free tickets from a cousin I had that played in the open from Europe. Most of the audience were rich older people, or "foreigners".Boxing? It's gone down and down in popularity. I think it was much more popular decades past. |
