Reverse Commute From Queens To Weehawken

One of the positions I am answering in my job hunt will involve a reverse commute from Eastern Queens to Weehawken, NJ.

From the map, I see that Weehawken is just outside the mouth of the Lincoln Tunnel, but probably too far out of the reach of the PATH Hoboken line.

Are there any reverse commute buses from the Port Authority Bus Terminal that stop at Weehawken right outside the Tunnel so that my commute from the wilds of Eastern Queens won't be that much of a bitch? I would hate to accept the position, only to find out that my 25-minute-by-night automobile trip will turn into a multi-jointed, 2-hour-long marathon by public transportation.

I don't think I can tolerate a 20-30 minute bus ride, followed by a 30-45 minute subway ride, followed by another 20-30 minute bus ride, with all associated waiting, in all manners of weather and with all the permutations for delay.

Thanks.

If it is by Lincoln Harbor or in that area, the 158 should help. Look here for the schedule. Fare is $2.30 one way.

Thanks!

Now that just leaves me with the best way to get to the PABT from what was formerly known as a "two-fare zone" in Queens.

The E train leaves you right downstairs from the PABT, or the 7 train leaves you one long block (underground or over-the-ground) from the bus terminal.

Yeah, I knew that much, but my problem with the whole damned thing is taking a bus to the subway, the subway to the PABT, and the PABT through the Lincoln Sphincter to Weehawken.

Three transfers, an interminable ride, and too many permutations and combinations for there to be a problem somewhere, preventing me from getting to work on time or at all.

If the 7 train derails, or there is yet another slow order on the Queens Boulevard line, or the Lincoln Sphincter is closed down for a terrorist investigation, or any one of a hundred other little breakdowns, multiplied by the number of transfers, and my commute is a wrap for the day. As it stands, it will take at least an hour and a half, if not two hours, for this whole commute each way, half of which will be waiting for the next vehicle, or walking to it to catch it. No thanks.

Maybe the Railroad to Penn Station and either walk to the PABT or indulge myself in a one-stop subway ride if the weather is too inclement? But I am still over a mile from the RR station. What will that do to the commuting time?

Just take the NY Waterway and take it to Port Imperial. Its really easy. I just tried riding the NY Waterway from Port Imperial to Pier 79 on 39th St. Mnahattan and its pretty good. And the light rail is right across the street from the Port Imperial Terminal, the only think is that you have to cross a highway because the overpass isn't done and won't be for a while. And their buses are free in Manhattan so its pretty good. Just wish that it wasn't 6 bucks for one way, 3-4 bucks would be great for the fare. But buses leave the PABT all the time and goes around Weehawken so you have wide options.

I'm not 100% sure on this one (I know if I'm off by a little a certain member will have a temper tantrum) but I think the Hudson Bergen Light Rail serves Weekhawken. Perhaps you can take the PATH to Hoboken for the HBLR.

But the Weehawken stops are only Lincoln Harbor and Port Imperial on the HBLR. And plus you can take the HBLR from Pavonia-Newport PATH, its just the Journal Sq. train there only, and plus Tonnelle Ave. trains from West Side Ave. are faster.

If your near the LIRR and your place of employment is near Lincoln Harbour, then I'd suggest LIRR to Penn, walk to PATH, PATH to HBLR. From about August 2001 to June 2002, I used NJT's 126 to go to Hoboken and it skirted around Lincoln Harbour by about two blocks or so. It was so-so in the morning, but afternoons, it was just a pointless waste. Morning traffic can be bad and the buses will come late if there's a big delay with morning inbound traffic, but it didn't seem that bad. Afternoon traffic was just always horrible and it never moved. Personally, I'd rather take my chance on "three train monte" than the bus at PABT.

If you position requires you go to Weehakwen proper, then you're sorta forced into taking the buses since the Lincoln Harbour and Port Imperial* HBLR stations aren't close enough to the town proper. I'd still give the edge to the LIRR to getting into Manhattan if it isn't going to ruin you financially. It's a bit more comfortable and the ride's faster in most cases. If you're cheap, you can walk to PABT since it isn't that bad a walk in most cases.

*An elevator similar to the one constructed at 9th/Congress Streets should have been built at Port Imperial to make the station remotely useful to Weehawken residents.

Well, he can still take the HBLR to Bergenline Ave cause Weehawken Proper is right there, just buy a HBLR ticket with a bus transfer if its requires you to take the bus from the station.

Thanks for your suggestions and input. From the way this all sounds, I might just have to refuse any interview or offer at Weehawken that doesn't include helicopter service.

LIRR to PATH to Light Rail?
LIRR to a walk to PABT to a bus to light rail?
LIRR to a bus to a ferry costing $11 each way, combined?
A bus to the subway to either PABT, PATH, Light Rail and/or a ferry?

Who needs that shit? Like I said, if any one of the links in this chain poops out one day, I may as well not go to work that day. And even if they don't, I'll spend too much time smelling bus fumes and steel dust than roses.

However, it isn't that close. Furthermore, an elevator, if put in there, could be the final coffin in the nail for the 23 route, allowing for it to be killed. (Former #23 Boulevard East customers could instead use the 128 instead from Port Imperial on Boulevard East---assuming that private property isn't in the way.)

The buses from the #23 (which number about 6-8 in maximum usage) could then be redirected to other uses, such as improvements on the 2 route (or buses could be taken back and redeployed elsewhere in New Jersey, such as Camden).

And also at the Port Imperial light rail station, the overpass isn't done, but when it is I believe it going to become a great combo, its going to connect the Port Imperial ferry terminal, the light rail station and into Weehawken Proper cause it looks like it has an extention after the staircase to the light rail.

Adam...fastest route would be LIRR to Penn...then Path to Hoboken. Then take the HBLR that is marked to Tonnelle Ave. That (I believe) is the stop in Weehawken.

Don't forget....you can always move to NJ...at least you'd be paying less tax over there.

Well heck. How long do you think it takes me to get from central Suffolk County to Houston Street in Manhattan? And I have to deal with the LIRR, which stumbles from one catastrophe to another. Lengthy commuting times are pretty much unavoidable in the New York area, and in most other large cities too. Be happy that the cost of commuting from Queens to Weehawken would be a lot more reasonable than if you had to make a long ride on a commuter train.

The Tonnelle Ave stop is 51st St. and Tonnelle Ave in North Bergen. Lincoln Harbor and Port Imperial are the Weehawken stops. And moving to NJ is a good idea too, saves you on commute. But the only places to live now in this area are condos.

You haven't mentioned if you're near an LIRR station.

LIRR to Penn, NY Waterways bus to the ferry (walk in good weather - it's good for you) plus ferry is a reasonable trip.

It's too much to go through daily.

Thanks. It's what I've suspected.

It's not the total time on the road (I'd figure about an hour and a half each way, which is a bitch in itself), but the number of different connections that has to be made. If one of those connections breaks down, or has a "sick passenger," or is "on strike," or falls victim to ice in the river or snow on the road, I can't get to work on time.

Two to four different vehicles over two to four authorities over two to four different rights-of-way is too much to ask for it to all be choreographed properly day in and day out.

And furthermore, it's not like I can just sink my suit-covered-anus into a seat and sleep for the hour-and-a-half. I will spend half of my time or more getting to or waiting for the next vehicle. Who needs that?

This is not "railfanning." This is trying to get to a livelihood.

What about driving and paying only one way toll on a hudson river crossing? Did you factor in parking costs? There's no way that will take longer than public transportation even if stuck in traffic. There's a lot of people who live in New Jersey and commute to Long Island as well.

He can't help it. When he starts up like that just let it go and reply to some other post in the thread (or start a new thread). He's a slow learner...

You do have the option, of course, of standing up and walking around on the LIRR.

You don't have that option while walking from bus to train or from train to bus.

I just find it a bit strange that you think that the price one pays to commute should depend on how much time the commute takes, not on how much distance it covers.

I don't quite follow. LIRR prices are high not so much because of time or distance, but rather because it's a commuter rail line as opposed to an urban mass transit system.

So that justifies him in making a very sniveling and false accusation?

What does the mere fact of looking for employment have to do with someone's uncouth and rather envious comment?

And then you have the unmitigated chutzpah to go to Shul on Saturday.

Fucking hypocrite. Typical.

I have renewed respect for myself. I know it's not the Shul, the keeping Kosher, the Torah. It's the neshumma. If you are just an evil son-of-a-bitch, all the Torah and Kosher and Shul in the world can't make you a mensch.

Take that to Gehenom with you.
