Then please do tell me why, in Ireland, gays and lesbians are permitted, even encouraged, to participate in St. Patrick's Day celebrations and parades? When Mary McAleese, the President of Ireland, was invited to come to NYC and be the Grand Marshal of the AOH Parade, she turned them down, specifically citing their prohibition against gays and lesbians marching openly as the reason she demurred.

Care to address that?

SO HOW IS IT THAT IN IRELAND, THE MOTHER-COUNTRY, GAYS ARE ALLOWED TO MARCH AND HAVE BEEN FOR QUITE SOME TIME?

WE COULD LOOK AT THIS ANOTHER WAY, WHERE CITY-SERVICES, POLICE ETC. ARE BEING USED AT TAX-PAYERS EXPENSE TO MAKE THIS PARADE HAPPEN YEAR AFTER YEAR YET THE PARADE ORGANIZERS STILL WANT TO DISCRIMINATE AGAINST GAY MARCHERS.

Under their own banner, specifically mentioning that they are Gay??
I have no answer for that. Who runs that parade over there?
With the NYC parade, Its an AOH issue & stance that I happen to agree with.

And as far as taxpayer expense, there out there for all parades, including Gay rights, so don't go there.

"THE PARADE ORGANIZERS STILL WANT TO DISCRIMINATE AGAINST GAY MARCHERS"

Where is it written that Gays can't march??

The only difference is that the Gay Pride Parade does not discriminate........therefore...why should the taxpayer pay for these expenses when the St. Pat's Parade DOES discriminate?

"Where is it written that Gays can't march?? "

AHO says they use the BIBLE for discriminatory purposes......funny how some people use the Bible against Gays but never against heterosexuals. I mean....are you going to tell me that all the marchers are Pro-life? or that the never used contraceptive devices? or had sex before marriage?

I think it will take a couple of generations for most gay men to mature beyond having to place a gay asterisk in front of whatever achievement he produces. This means not reminding everyone that he is gay but rather reminding everyone that he has achieved something. That means leaving the concept of sexuality at home and just being and acting equal to everyone else who leaves their sexuality at home as well. In order to be treated equally then one should act equally.

Guinness Pulls Out Of NYC St. Patrick's Day Parade

Guinness pulls out of NY's St. Patrick's parade over ban on gays

By Elizabeth Barber
Sun Mar 16, 2014 8:27pm EDT
Irish brewer Guinness said on Sunday that it would not participate in New York City's St. Patrick's Day parade this year because gay and lesbian groups had been excluded, costing organizers a key sponsor of the annual event.

The move came on the same day that Boston's Irish-American mayor skipped that city's St. Patrick's Day parade after failing to hammer out a deal with organizers to allow a group of gay and lesbian activists to march openly.

"Guinness has a strong history of supporting diversity and being an advocate for equality for all. We were hopeful that the policy of exclusion would be reversed for this year's parade," the brewer said in a written statement issued by a spokesman for its parent company, Diageo.

"As this has not come to pass, Guinness has withdrawn its participation. We will continue to work with community leaders to ensure that future parades have an inclusionary policy," Guinness said.

Last week New York Mayor Bill de Blasio said he would not march in the parade because gay and lesbian activists had been again precluded from taking part.

The loss of Guinness, one of the world's top beer brands originating in Dublin, Ireland, appeared to ratchet up the pressure on organizers even further.

On Friday, two other major beer companies, Sam Adams brewer Boston Beer Co and Heineken dropped their sponsorship of parades in Boston and New York, respectively, over the issue.

Representatives for the New York board of the Ancient Order of the Hibernians, which has run the parade for more than 150 years, could not be reached for comment on Sunday afternoon.

Earlier in the day Boston Mayor Marty Walsh skipped his city's parade when he couldn't negotiate a deal with organizers, the conservative Allied War Veteran's Council, to allow members of MassEquality, one of Massachusetts' largest gay activist groups, to join.

Increasing Criticism

"So much of our Irish history has been shaped by the fight against oppression," Walsh, the city's first Irish-American mayor in 20 years, said in a statement.

"As mayor of the city of Boston, I have to do my best to ensure that all Bostonians are free to participate fully in the civic life of our city. Unfortunately, this year, the parties were not able to come to an understanding that would have made that possible."

Despite Walsh's boycott, other prominent Democratic Boston politicians, including Representative Stephen Lynch, marched in the parade, which drew tens of thousands of spectators, some of whom expressed disappointment at MassEquality's exclusion.

"It's supposed to be a time when everyone can come together," said university student Jeyashri Sridhar, 18. "It's sad that people can't participate because of who they are."

Organizers of St. Patrick's Day parades in New York and Boston, among the most liberal-leaning cities in the United States, have come under increasing criticism in recent years for banning openly gay marchers.

Parade organizers argue that to do so would conflict with their Roman Catholic heritage. The Catholic church contends that homosexual activity is immoral.

While MassEquality did not participate, the parade was not without gay marchers.

South Boston resident Randy Foster, along with his husband Steve Martin, organized a diversity-themed float that sported rainbow flags but no direct gay rights messages. Foster said the flags represented the proverbial pot of gold at the end of the rainbow in Irish lore, though he acknowledged the gay-rights movement uses a rainbow flag.

"If there's a dual message to it, we're OK with it and so are the parade organizers," said Foster, 48. "We made the point of not making it a gay float. If we're going to have a message of inclusion, it shouldn't be for one group."

Massachusetts in 2003 became the first U.S. state to legalize gay marriage. Attitudes on gay marriage have changed markedly across the nation since then, with 17 states and the District of Columbia now allowing same-sex couples to wed.

Who's terrorizing? Unlike yourself, I actually AM Irish. My stance on all this is completely bended from apparently everyone else's. I consider the Hibernians a backward group myself, and I've dealt with them personally. They're throwbacks to a different time and I understand that.

My own take on all this is that parades themselves are a stupid artifice of a land that time forgot. A bunch of people assembling a procession so they can show their numbers for whatever reason they feel like. And as far as I'm concerned, they have full "freedom of association" to associate with whoever the hell they feel like and those who disagree have the God-given right to turn their backs on them. That affects the number of people who show up to participate in or stand on the sidewalk and watch them go by.

If the Hibernians don't want gays in their parade, I have no problem with that. And I certainly wouldn't want to see them FORCED into it, because if THEY get forced into allowing people they don't want in THEIR parade, what's to stop a gay pride parade from having to allow Westboro people or several militant NRA sections in THEIR parade? Take away one group's freedoms and everybody else can lose theirs. So that's how *I* see it.

The Mister Patrick parade ain't no fun anyway anymore - the big thrill to it years ago was following along with the parade, bar-hopping up Fifth Avenue until you ran out of bars. :)

Nobody is attacking the parade. Some corporate sponsors withdrew their funds (after all, all parades have to pay for street closures, police, EMT and cleanup) on the basis of what they felt were reprehensible practices / arcane rules. That is the parade committee's problem, re-raising those funds in time to obtain the bonding so the parade actually happens. That doesn't seem to be at issue here either, since both NYC and Boston's parades appear ready to go on time.

So what's the problem? The arcane, medieval rules of who can march as whom we see every year since the late seventies. I'm pleased to see major sponsors pulling back from this. However, it's up to the Hibernians to change. They even did so across the pond. Gays have mar hed in the Pulaski day parade in NYC for nearly 20 years now, respectfully and peacefully. No reason that can't happen here.

There aren't as many actual boomers here as you may think. Most are Xers.

How are their rules arcane? I find them archaic, but completely comprehensible.

It's not at all up to the Hibernians to change. They are under absolutely NO obligation to change their religious views, nor do things against such. That is why there is freedom of religion in this country, something people like you do not approve of.

You are correct about the Boomers, however, you were just responding to one with that comment.

Religious views? LOL.

Do they also exclude marchers known to have engaged in the mortal sin of premarital heterosexual sex?

It's not like marching in the parade is the equivalent of taking Communion.

It's an Irish ethnic parade.

It's not in County Suffolk in Massachusetts (Boston). It's Evacuation Day, commemorating the withdrawal of British troops from Boston on 17 March 1776. It's also a civil holiday, with county and state offices closed in Suffolk County.

So it's the Evacuation Day Parade, as opposed to the St Patricks Day Parade.

Brentwood is going to light up this summer. Watch. It's going to be bloody.

Yeah. Amanda and A1M or AlM left that war zone just in time. She was apparently traumatized from the gunfire and is still on the run up in Westchester. As spring approaches, I'll be reconnoitering the area around the Deer Park Air Navigation Facility (117.7/124X) which is located directly in the line of fire between Brentwood and Wyandanch at 40° 47' 30.299N 073° 18' 13.168W and is People and Folk Nation territory. I think Newark, Camden, and Paterson are going to erupt in gun violence this summer you watch.
