Nobody is attacking the parade. Some corporate sponsors withdrew their funds (after all, all parades have to pay for street closures, police, EMT and cleanup) on the basis of what they felt were reprehensible practices / arcane rules. That is the parade committee's problem, re-raising those funds in time to obtain the bonding so the parade actually happens. That doesn't seem to be at issue here either, since both NYC and Boston's parades appear ready to go on time.So what's the problem? The arcane, medieval rules of who can march as whom we see every year since the late seventies. I'm pleased to see major sponsors pulling back from this. However, it's up to the Hibernians to change. They even did so across the pond. Gays have mar hed in the Pulaski day parade in NYC for nearly 20 years now, respectfully and peacefully. No reason that can't happen here. |
