I beg to differ. The object of being able to march openly and proudly as gay or lesbian in a St. Patrick's Day parade is to celebrate the long and rich record of contributions by gay and lesbian Irish people to Irish and American history and culture. Secondly, marching openly at the Parade is a statement of equality, that gays and lesbian no longer have to hide who they are.

We still live in a society where the LGBT community must live in constant fear of being attacked, killed, legislated against, or fired merely because of who we are. It's not about "flaunting our sexuality", but about being full members of society. After all, we pay just as much tax as straight people, with the added burden of being excluded from things like parades in spite of it. Our taxes help pay for those public streets the parade goes down, and for the public resources used to operate it, remember?
