That's pretty much it. When folks get older, they cling to comfort and tradition and the organizers of old school get mighty butthurt when someone's shaking their tree. That's why I'm a firm believer in upcoming and new and let the thinking-impaired just live in their comfort zone as long as they don't harm others lest we have to pay to round 'em up. :)

But yeah, I kinda consider the Hibernian parade to be just another tourist trap. I mean really ... if they won't let me sit in the gutter piss drunk, swilling a brewski, what's the point of even showing up for the damned thing? Heh.

Do you think a bar owner who sells a lot of Sam Adams is necessarily going to pull it off the taps either? I don't necessarily agree with how some of you are connecting the dots between Irish bars and the St. Paddy's day parade in Boston. Maybe the bars in Boston along the parade route but not every single bar is pulling Sammy off-the-shelf.
I did a Google search for widespread banning of Sam Adams on the St. Patrick's Day in reaction to this but didn't really find any evidence of widespread banning in reaction to the Boston beer Company's decision.
I did find that Heineken has joined the Boston beer Company in pulling their sponsorship of the parade.

Again, big companies like this don't make decisions like that without running the numbers first. If they can present the stockholders with solid evidence that it will boost sales or even not affect sales then they're good to go.

Fred

Have you been in that area when the Gay Pride Parade is going on? I have family that lives in the area and had the misfortune of attempting to go along Addison from the area west of Clark to LSD right after the parade ended last year. It's an absolute mess. Why would you want to subject the greatest fans in baseball to the complete and utter chaos that parade creates?

As Fred said, rightly, it's simple economics. Fighting the city council on that matter means having a game where the fans are impeded in their arrival, and the police presence outside the stadium for traffic control is reduced. Why fight it and give your fans a subpar experience when a game in Wrigley is all about the experience?

I live very close. And since it seams you that you are familar with Chicago, I live in the Edgewater neighborhood, right off Lake Michigan, 2 blocks from the Red line. And I have in fact witnessed first hand the immense crowds it produces.

Let's put things in perspective. The Cubs have been playing in Wrigley Field since 1916, the gay parade since 1970, both have co-existed fine for when the Cubs have been in town, say 50% of the time they have been in town together.

Wrigley Field is one of one of, if not the biggest tourist attraction in Chicago. People come from all over the country catch a game at Wrigley Field, and this was a prime date at the beginning of the summer.

But I guess Tom Ricketts doesn't mind the revenue he would other wise he would be making that day, but the area's buisnesses I'm sure are pissed on the revenue they'll be losing that day. I'm taking my buisness to Milwaukee that day.

IRISH-AMERICAN BOSTON MAYOR SAYS NO TO MARCHING IN THE ST. PAT'S PARADE

Boston mayor to miss St. Patrick's parade over exclusion of gay marchers

Elizabeth Barber

9:48 a.m. CDT, March 16, 2014
Boston's Irish-American mayor will not march in the city's St. Patrick's Day parade Sunday after failing to hammer out a deal with organizers to allow a group of gay and lesbian activists to march openly.

Mayor Marty Walsh had tried to negotiate a deal with organizers, the conservative Allied War Veteran's Council, to allow members of MassEquality, one of Massachusetts' largest gay activist groups, to join the parade.

"So much of our Irish history has been shaped by the fight against oppression," Walsh, the city's first Irish-American mayor in 20 years, said in a statement.

"As mayor of the city of Boston, I have to do my best to ensure that all Bostonians are free to participate fully in the civic life of our city. Unfortunately, this year, the parties were not able to come to an understanding that would have made that possible."

Organizers of St. Patrick's Day parades in New York and Boston, among the most liberal-leaning cities in the United States, have come under increasing criticism in recent years for banning openly gay marchers.

Parade organizers argue that to do so would conflict with their Roman Catholic heritage. The Catholic church contends that homosexual activity is immoral.

New York Mayor Bill de Blasio also plans to boycott his city's parade, scheduled for Monday, in protest.

On Friday, two major beer companies, Sam Adams brewer Boston Beer Co and Heineken dropped their sponsorship of parades in Boston and New York, respectively, over the issue.

In Boston, Walsh had tried to reach a deal for MassEquality's members to march openly, rather than without any identification of their sexual orientation as required by parade organizers.

The invitation to MassEquality was subsequently rescinded by the parade organizers, who said they had been "misled" about the number of veterans in the gay and lesbian group.

Massachusetts in 2003 became the first U.S. state to legalize gay marriage. Attitudes on gay marriage have changed markedly across the nation since then, with 17 states and the District of Columbia now allowing same-sex couples to wed.

You keep calling the LGBT community "terrorists", but we are not the ones using violence. In recent weeks:

A Texas father was arrested on suspicion of having killed his daughter AND her girlfriend, because he didn't like the fact that his child was gay.

A group of uniformed security volunteers, most likely members of the Shomrim Patrol, a Hasidic Jewish group in Brooklyn, severely beat a young gay man walking home from the subway, on the streets of Williamsburg. Dozens of witnesses saw the attack, and heard the assailants screaming anti-gay slurs as they struck and kicked their victim, who suffered a skull fracture in the attack.

A gay couple, holding hands while waiting for a train on the West 4th Street subway platform, was brutally attacked by a man who asked them if they were "fucking faggots", before pummeling one of the men so savagely that he sustained a fractured eye socket and head trauma. Over fifty witnesses watched the unprovoked attack happen.

So now you, and everyone else, can understand who the real terrorists are.

By the way, Guinness has now joined the boycott of NYC's St. Patrick's Day Parade tomorrow. I'm sure they did so out of abject fear of physical harm by gay people. NOT.

"All these people seek is the right to march in an ethnic parade as the people they are."

Whats your defination of "as they are"?? This is not a question about rights, its a question of priorities.. Study some Irish history & you'll learn that we had our turn on the recieving end of serious discrimination & denial of rights. We fought together, both gay & straight (I'm sure it was a we're in this together attitude weather they knew it or not) to achieve independence from the Union Jack & to show the world that we could do more than build the Lexington Ave subway. Nobody felt the need to advertise how they socalized when they went home. Why is that important now??

The parade is supposed to grant the participants the right of celebrating the Irish contribution to the development to American society & not their choice of a conjucial partner.

Just why they insist that they have to proclaim to the world that they are gay tells the casual observer that their priorities are to parade their sexuality rather their sense of Irish pride.

Its not about being gay or straight, its about being Irish & proud of it. Straight answer.

And as for the AOH, like it or not, its their party, their rules. Don't like it, stay home.

I beg to differ. The object of being able to march openly and proudly as gay or lesbian in a St. Patrick's Day parade is to celebrate the long and rich record of contributions by gay and lesbian Irish people to Irish and American history and culture. Secondly, marching openly at the Parade is a statement of equality, that gays and lesbian no longer have to hide who they are.

We still live in a society where the LGBT community must live in constant fear of being attacked, killed, legislated against, or fired merely because of who we are. It's not about "flaunting our sexuality", but about being full members of society. After all, we pay just as much tax as straight people, with the added burden of being excluded from things like parades in spite of it. Our taxes help pay for those public streets the parade goes down, and for the public resources used to operate it, remember?

This ain't hatred anyone.

The ones who wish to interrupt the parade with statement of sexuality are the haters. They have their own parades and ways of expressing their lifestyle without trying to fuck with this ethnic parade.
