You need to edit my positions. I'm pro-choice, pro-stem cell research, I'm for smoking in public, and my view on gay marriage cannot truly be labelled as "against". Except for legalizing drugs, I'm a social libertarian.

Interesting that you didn't include some other controversial issues, like the war in Iraq, torture and the R44.

Here's my official rundown:

Stem cell - pro
Gun control - pro, with significant restriction
Abortion choice - pro, though I support some limits
Federal healthcare - anti, and it's NOT possible I could be convinced otherwise
Port sale - anti
Social Security reform - More pro than you
Morning after - pro, but not OTC
Gay marriage - anti, I support domestic partnerships
Public smoking ban - anti
Patriot Act - pro
Creation in schools - anti
Motorcycle helmets - pro (where's the cops when the OCC boys test ride their new choppers?)

Reform akin to the current administration's proposals are inevitable. Polls consistently show that the strongest support for these proposals comes from Gen-X'ers. The strongest opposition comes from the WWII and Baby Boomer generations. They're all gonna die eventually.

On the other hand, it is not at all difficult to imagine the Emirates succumbing to Taliban-style fundamentalism, most likely in Domino Effect fashion following the fall of Saudi Arabia.

Saudi Arabia is already ruled by Taliban-style fundamentalists.

Stem Cell Yes, absolutely. Cloning (human or animal), for therapeutic and for reproduction as well. I see no inherent problem with it (although problems could be raised by the development of said fetuses, this is better dealt with as a research/medical ethics issue than a legislative one - I don't want politicians dictating my own research, so I don't want them dictating any of my colleagues' research).

Gun Control No. Gun control means you can hit your target. Gun education is key, and groups like the NRA should be commended for their efforts toward this end (e.g. Eddie Eagle). Automatic weapons, yes, those should be restricted (they have been since 1934), as should rocket launchers, hand grenades, nuclear bombs, and things of that sort - anything you'd see Arnold Schwarzenegger or Rambo running around with probably isn't a legitimate civilian device for self defense or food acquisition. As far as handguns/rifles/shotguns, any federal legislation is blatantly unconstitutional vis a vis the 2nd Amendment. At state and local level it's a little tricky. I have no problem with registration, as long as it's local and pretty disorganized (organized and efficient registration is the penultimate step to confiscation). Carry permits should be issued on a "shall issue" basis - that means you get one *unless* there is a specific reason not to (past suicide attempts, past criminal record or history of violent mental illness, etc. I have no problem with, and am in fact in favor of, requiring a gun safety class and passage of a practical firearms test for receipt of a carry permit.) Discretionary systems (as in NYC and most big cities) are rife with corruption and racist discrimination (I can cite examples) and it is imperative that every one of them be abolished.

Abortion Choice Yes, with limitations, as we have discussed here. No late-term abortion on demand unless sufficient medical cause exists to necessitate termination.

Federal Healthcare In general, no. I have no problem with the government paying for healthcare for the destitute, or with taking over payment in cases of catastrophic loss not covered by insurance (that almost certainly would be defaulted anyway), but the primary system of health care payment would ideally be private health savings accounts (HSAs) to cover routine costs, backed up by private insurance pools (pay a small amount now so that on the off chance you incur a large expense later it will be covered), then finally backed up by state and local governments (NOT federal).

Port Sale What's the problem? So they're Arabs. Isn't the UAE one of the "good" countries?

Soc. Sec. Reform Yes. The system should be shifted to private savings accounts similar to the system in Chile. I don't have a problem with *requiring* workers to pay in a given percentage, since when this system fails (i.e. people outlive their money, or catastrophe strikes, or the severely disabled/institutionalized), state and local governments would take over, and it is in the interest of the rest of the taxpayers that you pay your fair share into your retirement before living off of everyone else. Public assistance should be only for the destitute, and those who are in this situation because of circumstances beyond their control. Otherwise you are better served by your own money (even if it takes a little coaxing to get you to save your own money).

Morning After Yes, absolutely. EC and available access to conventional contraception is one of the surest ways to reduce demand for late term elective abortion.

Gay Marriage Yes, absolutely. It is an absolute disgrace that gays do not have the same marriage rights and protections as heterosexuals. It is one of the greatest faults of this era, akin to the Jim Crow laws of decades past. There are no second class citizens, only citizens. And they're not likely to have abortions either :)

Public Smoking Ban N ot in general. On private property the decision should be up to the owner (or his/her designee). This includes private homes, apartment buldings/condos, bars, restaurants, etc. At most it could be required that a sign be posted at the entrance indicating whether smoking is allowed at a given establishment. On public property, in publically accessible areas, I have no problem with limiting smoking, although I'd like to see designated smoking areas are provided.

Patriot Act - As far as the more provocative proposals, no, absolutely. They're right up there with the Alien and Sedition Acts of 1798, the Sedition and Espionage Acts of 1917 and 1918, and a number of other despicable pieces of legislation passed throughout our history. The rest of it is mostly harmless window dressing (small technical changes to procedure, etc.), and nobody talks about that stuff.

Creation in Schools Public schools, in science class, absolutely not. Creationism/ID/whatever you call it is not science. Let me say it again. Creationism/ID/whatever you call it is not science. And as such it does not belong in science class. In a comparative religion or philosophy class, maybe - if it can be integrated into a meaningful curriculum, sure. Private schools, being private, can do what they want, but if they're going to teach non-science in science class, then their accreditation should be pulled. Sure, they can still operate, but that diploma isn't going to mean squat.

Motorcycle Helmet Req In principle, no. There should be no law to protect a head too willfully stupid to protect itself. But since these jackasses ride around and put a strain on EMS and police resources when they make organ donors of themselves... screw em, still no. Ride around all you want, dumbasses - I might need a liver someday. Yours will do quite nicely, and Mr. Darwin is on my side here.

And I'll throw in one more: Drug Legalisation Yes.

As long as everyone else was jumping on this bandwagon....
Here's mine:

Stem cell - pro

Gun control - pro

Abortion choice - pro, though I feel underage girls should have their parents aware. I also don't like to see it used as a form of "birth control".

Federal healthcare - pro

Port sale - anti

Social Security reform - pro (And probably more than usual, as I just had my taxes done). I think there are too many people taking advantage of the system. Yesterday I found myself completely annoyed as I was waiting in line at the deli to get my bacon/egg/cheese sandwich made, and this woman throws about 10 Little Debbie cakes, 5 bags of potato chips, and various other junk food on the counter, and pays with a "benefit card". It annoys me that my hard earned money goes to crap like that. And then another one came in, and was also paying with some sort of subsity card for similar trash items. And the attitude on these people's faces is "like it's coming to them". I work too hard for my money to see my tax dollars wasted on people that have no intention of working, and feel handouts are a given. They can't speak English often times, yet somehow they know how to get welfare relief.
< /rant >

Morning after - pro

Gay marriage - anti I don't agree with it being marriage. I do feel there should be some allowable common law status however, perhaps for the sharing of health benefits, etc for people like this.

Public smoking ban - anti - I find it absurd. If people want to smoke in designated areas, I have no problem with that. i think it's insane that they did away with smoking sections in restaurants and bars. At least in ones where they had seperate enclosed areas.

Patriot Act - pro

Creation in schools - anti School is no place for religious beliefs, at least not in public schools.

Motorcycle helmets - don't care - if someone wants to kill themselves, that's their problem.

Morning after - pro, but not OTC

The thing with the morning after pill is that unless it's available without prescription (OTC), the whole point behind it might be lost. It has to be taken with about 72 hours of the Dirty Deed in order to be effective. It can be very difficult for a woman to get a doctor's appointment and a prescription in that limited time frame, especially on a weekend (when the need for the pill probably is most likely to arise).

Someone was making a nonsense response to my nonsense statement, so I said the first thing that popped in my head: the chapters to A Canticle for Leibowitz. "Nucular" refers to the subject matter of the book: civilization gets ruined in a nucular war, and then grows back up from a base or two in Texas or Arkansaw or something (yikes!), and goes on to ruin itself again in another nucular war. The central character is essentially the Catholic adherent order of the Blessed (later Saint) Leibowitz and its participants, although the Wandering Jew shows up as a character at various points. There was a semi-sequel entitled Leibowitz and the Wild Horse Woman.

Social Security "reform" - For. I don't see how anyone but an ostrich could be against some type of reform (doesn't mean you have to agree with the administrations proposal, but the numbers don't lie...)

I may disagree with the Bush Administration's Social Security "reform" scheme, but had it been in place, my family probably would have benefited from it. Last May, my aunt passed away with no spouse or children. Currently, all of her social security money would remain in the hands of the federal government. Under the Bush Administration's plan, whatever she contributed would be returned to the executor of her estate to disperse as fit in her will. Admittedly, yes, it sounds like a good idea from the, but the staggering costs of conversion and government indebtness make it much less appealing.

Stem Cell: We should be researching this to determine if there's any use for them.

Gun Control: Useless fact...my paternal grandfather was a gun owner back in Haiti.

Obviously, there's no need for cop killer bullets and the like, but we obviously need minimum federal standards for gun purchasing. But, frankly, I am against any ban on guns. As for the Second Amendment nuts, the military has Apaches, F-16s, et alia. Your pissant weapons will do nothing.

Abortion Choice: Pro-choice, no parental notification, and abortions paid for by medicaid.

Federal Healthcare: This is a dicey proposition. Obviously, health care costs are spiraling out of control here in the States. Canadian style single-payer, single-tier system works for basic care and medium level services, but not expensive needs. One option would be to emulate the French system which as been ranked by the WHO as one of the best in the world. Essentially, everybody is covered, but private insurance and hospitals are availible to those who want to pay for it. Shortages aren't common (except in rural areas), and the people seem to be rather content. It's paid for with taxes taken from withholding (like Medicaid/care) and co-pays that are taken at each visit.

Admittedly, I'd like to see what becomes of Mitt Romney's proposal to force uninsured citizens of Massachusetts to purchase health insurance.

Port Sale: I'll duck this one. Let's just say I'm weary of a State-owned company doing this.

Soc. Sec. Reform: See here:.

Morning After: It should be availible OTC.

Gay Marriage: Legalize it. Marriage is a state contract. If heterosexuals are stupid enough to get married, why shouldn't gay people?

Public Smoking Ban: I really couldn't be bothered. I don't smoke, but I hang around smokers.

Patriot Act: Again another dicey one. I think that we need a means of looking for terrorists, but it should be as close to proper legal guidelines as possible. To bend the Constitution to round up people on serious charges damages the credibility of the State, and makes us no better than terrorists.

Creation in Schools: It doesn't belong in a science class no matter what the peasants think.

Motorcycle Helmet Req: Go ahead and not use your helmets. Just make sure that your family members don't sue.

WMATAGMOAGH: for
aem7ac: okay, unless he's pissing me off, in which case, against
AMoriera: okay
RoninBayside: okay (used to be "for", but downgraded to "okay", because he had some issues concerning knowledge of the NYC transit system)
Larry: for
