I marvel at how well planes get you across oceans or to different parts of the world. It's quite a feeling when flying over to Europe to find that you had almost a full day in New York and now you're having almost a full day in whatever European city even though it's the very next day. And then coming back you can have a leisurely breakfast in Europe and often still have a leisurely dinner in NY the same day.But if there was a train that took you across the ocean to Europe and got you there within a day or two and wasn't that much more expensive I'd probably use it. For more domestic matters, the heavy use of planes is because we don't have good rail. Rail doesn't really have to compete with the speed of planes for short-medium hops (not talking about coast-to-coast) but just compete with the speed of cars - but it isn't even doing that in the US. |
