Remember the bus DOES NOT belong to the operator but is assigned to him, thus HE MUST obey all directives and regulations in regards to operation of the bus!

When a bus is too crowded the operator must put up the "Next bus please" sign via the farebox. This will register that the bus is full and will assist planning/schedules in looking into the problem.
Being the tradegy occurred I understand what the operators are doing and I won't write an operator for doing it but I will verbally warn the operator.
Under any other cirsumstances I would warn an operator several times before writing them up, however a bus in service with a not in service sign would get the operator an immediate violation no warning.
Doing route compliance Friday night I did write up an operator for the B46 sign but only because he was pulling in off route as well.
I did catch another operator but he was a TA operator and he looked like a nice young guy. He apologized and I gave him a verbal. But he also had a B46 sign up and was off route pulling in.
In a mega depot like MTV with 600+ operators, 275 buses, 73 QC buses you have to run the depot by the book or will quickly lose control and the operators will not respect you.
Then the boss will have a problem with me!

Well the MTA could care, the GS at my depot is trying to stop us from sending a bus to the funeral. How about that for a tribute.
The PD has a black band (mourning band) that goes around the shield. The MTA doesn't even consider that.

I don't think you understand. Let me put forward a scenario for you.

Operator is deadheading on Route Q46. QV driver is paying his respects to Mr. Thomas by displaying a B46 sign. Old lady waiting for a bus sees a B46 blow by her. She calls customer information and reports that bus 64xx blew by her in service on Union Turnpike. Driver is yanked into office.

1) If the driver says that he was "Not In Service", the report will state that 46 was on the sign and he'll be written up for a wrong sign or flagging a passenger.

2) If the driver says that he had a "B46 sign" up, he'll be written up for a wrong sign.

3) If the driver plays dumb, a spotter will be out there to catch him. If they catch him with a "B46 sign" on the street, he could get two writeups and time to think about it.

All that could happen over a sign tribute. I wish I was being farfetched, but our population makes a habit of looking at the route number only. If a M15 said that it was going to Hell, it would have a standing load going there.

MTA employees walk to Andrew Torregrossa & Sons funeral home for the wake of Edwin Thomas who was fatally stabbed while driving a bus.

Bus drivers mourn slain colleague

City bus drivers by the thousands braved the blustery chill of winter Sunday night to mourn a hardworking colleague stabbed to death by a fare-beater on his Brooklyn route.

A somber line that included Mayor Bloomberg stretched from Edwin Thomas' coffin out the front door of the Andrew Torregrossa & Sonsfuneral home in Brooklyn.

Fellow drivers at the wake expressed grief and anger at the death of Thomas, and a few revealed their own fears of meeting a similar fate.

"It was an unfortunate tragedy that could have happened to any one of us in this line," said driver Luis Santiago, 41, who was waiting to get into the packed chapel to pay his respects to Thomas' family.

Thomas, a 46-year-old father of two teenagers, was slain last Monday when he got into a beef with 20-year-old Horace Moore, who had sneaked aboard the B46 bus in Bedford-Stuyvesant without paying.

Cops said Moore stabbed Thomas in the chest and stomach when the driver denied his request for a free $2 transfer.

Moore, a paroled ex-con recently released from a prison stint for attempted murder, was captured when he was turned in by a man who regularly buys marijuana from him, police said.

"It's a shame that it takes something like this to show the dangers of our job," said driver Ty Johnson, 42, wearing an armband in memory of Thomas.

A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the Sacred Heart Church in Cambria Heights, Queens.

I worked the road for 5 years before picking inside. Its where I got my nickname "The Bulldog" because I was a very agressive road man and tried many things other dispatchers would have been scared to try.
And let me tell you something else. Once I write a violation and turn it in to my boss its our of my hands. I'm not one who begs the boss to burn the operator and in fact I never have asked a boss what he did with my violation.
A violation is just that. A report to the boss that an operator violated a operational rule, nothing else. When an operator comes back to me and tells me he got off easy thats fine with me, because did my job and the operator gets in no serious trouble. On the same hand if an operator gets a serious penalty I don't like it but the operator violated the rules, not me.
If I were to violate the rules my manager would have no problem writing me up.
MTA is a cold hearted business but as a buff in the heart I love my job.
