From late 1996- ear;y 1999 I rode bee Line's #2 almost every day, the whole length of the route. And I'll tell you, I saw some very "interesting" exchanges between the various B/Os and the passengers.

Just one: A B/O simply pointed (AM trip, southbound) out to an adult woman that she hadn't paid. She leaned right in his face, like within an inch or so, and screamed "Drive the bus, MF!".

Your prayer isn't the least bit offensive! A man was killed just doing his job. aosted elsewhere in the thread, I can't understand what the perp was thinking, and like someone else said, why couldn't he just have beat the fare a second time? he'd have gotten his free ride, this B/O would still be alive, and he wouldn't be facing life in jail or a police bullet.

Wait...I know why he had to kill him...saying "no" to the transfer was "disrespect".

I completely agree.
I hate to say it, but there certainly are ample opportunities for a terrorist to hijack a transit bus and use it as a weapon on city streets.
I say DHS and TSA ought to give financial help to have the DOB outfit all their buses with "B/O cabs" (complete with London-style full plexiglas shields and locking doors).

STED & the Bus Unit of the NYPD are not sufficent enough to protect B/O's and the MTA doesn't do enough to protect us or prevent these tragedies from occuring IMO.

Here is NYCT's Official Statement:

MTA NYC Transit Bus Operator Killed
in Line of Duty

MTA NYC Transit Bus Operator Edwin Thomas, 46, was stabbed to death on Monday, December 1st during a dispute with a customer onboard his B46 bus. The incident, which occurred at the intersection of Gates Avenue and Malcom X Boulevard in Brooklyn was reported at 12:32 p.m. Thomas was transported by Emergency Medical Services to Woodhull Hospital where he expired, despite the heroic efforts of paramedics on the scene and medical staff at Woodhull Hospital led by Dr. Maurice Wright, Chairman of the Emergency Department.

Elliot G. Sander, MTA Executive Director and CEO said: "Edwin Thomas' death is a terrible loss for the MTA, NYC Transit and all of New York. Mr. Thomas was a dedicated bus operator, husband and father who was tragically killed serving the public on his B46 bus route in Brooklyn. The MTA is working closely with the NYPD and the Brooklyn District Attorney to ensure that Mr. Thomas' killer is brought to justice."

H. Dale Hemmerdinger, MTA Chairman: "Thousands of wonderful people work at the MTA, and it is a tragedy that one of them was lost in the line of duty today. You never expect something like this to happen, but all of our employees put themselves at potential risk every day to serve New York. Our thoughts and prayers are with Mr. Thomas' family and friends at this tragic time."

A seven-year Transit veteran assigned to Flatbush Depot, Thomas was a valued employee and will be sorely missed by his co-workers. “Dealing with the death of an employee is the most difficult task of any Transit manager and this is certainly no exception. Bus Operator Thomas was killed in the line of duty, serving the people of New York City,” said NYC Transit President Howard H. Roberts, Jr. “I speak for the whole of NYC Transit in offering my deepest sympathies to his family.”

The last bus operator slain in the line of duty was Harvey Schield in 1981. He was killed while operating a B44 bus at Avenue Z and Nostrand Avenue in Brooklyn. Mindful of the dangers bus operators face MTA NYC Transit works closely with the Brooklyn District Attorney’s Office on it’s Assault on Transit Workers Program. This initiative is designed to ensure that assaults on MTA NYC Transit workers such as bus operators, train operators and conductors will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.

Yes, but assaults are plenty and the MTA needs to have preventive measures e.g. driver partitions, they just treat us as expendable and if it happens only every 27 or so years we don't have to do anything and we save money by not installing protection and now we don't even have to pay them. Look at all the money the MTA will save!

Recently, New York City Transit has recorded a slight increase in assaults on bus operators. There were 82 in 2006, 99 in 2007, and 74 this year, as of Sept. 30. Not very rare and warrants protection.

This AP article says things went down a little differently. Reports so far say that the attacker boarded through the front door, swiped an invalid fare card, demanded a transfer, and stabbed Thomas when he refused. This article says the perp boarded at the rear, Thomas issued him the transfer, and the stabbing happened after Thomas followed him out of the bus and into the street. Sorry to say that doesn't make the case for driver partitions, unless they encourage drivers to stay in the seat.

sure you can. Chicago Transit Authority has a few on some of their newest D40LFs. Drivers partitions became standard spect on all Miami Dade Transit buses as well, except for their D4500s.

A good friend of mine & operator at CTA provided me a pic of the drivers shield being tested on their newest D40LFs. The plan is to get similar shields out fleetwide.

This perp was busted by transit bureau officers for carrying a folding knife on the C train. His case was adjourned and his parole officer yelled at him and them let him go.

The reason is undoubtedly overcrowding in the prisons. If parole officers sent every parolee back to prison for violations, there wouldn't be enough space and then either judges would be ordering releases or New York State would be paying a lot more money for out of state cells. So what should have been, in this case, a parole violation resulting in a return to prison, turned into a slap on the wrist.

Sorry, I should have been clearer... subway operators have both duties in our subway (drive one way, guard (conduct) the other). It is when I'm the guard sticking my head out the window that I fear retaliation for closing the doors.

TTC practices the policy of "education not enforcement". You educate the person about the fare (ie "Excuse me, sir, the fare is $2.75"). After the evader says "F$%^ YOU!" your job is essentially done. Unfortunately, sometimes merely mentioning the fare to some of these people is enough to set them off.

Thanks Eddie for posting this. The MTA in the past has said that these "obstuct view" & "are not customer friendly".

The way some of these "customers" behave, why should these things be in any way "friendly"?
