Well, it's to the east, but this looks about right.

As the images Sand Box John pulled out of Philly.com's uselessly flash ridden gallery illustrate, an open door is not the impediment to a forward view it is on the M1 through M6. Not only does the cab door have a large opening in it, but passengers can sit in the front left seats, right behind the foamerglass. I'm sure once again we'll see any number of people who wouldn't ordinarily act like a railfan migrate to the RFW upon boarding, but stil the argument will persist that a forward view from a railcar is completely unimportant in the face of a rolling crew lounge.

I don't think a rolling crew lounge could ever be justified. If I had the choice b/t a full cab and a half-cab/half trash can I'd pick the latter as at least it gives something back to me, the passenger.

What railroad has that?

Maybe a job on the RR might give you some perspective.

Good idea. I would like to see how MNRR addresses this issue.

In addition to my MNRR post, I don't see why the LIRR can't address the issue the same way with the appropriate unions!

That's nifty chart. If you ever ride thsat line , look at the schedule to see how the train does, they get 2 minuets between stations , that's 120 seconds, and includes from the stop and finally and load/unload time at the previous station to when they arrive and stop and the next. With accelerating and decelerating , I doubt if they go faster than 40 Mph between two points/stations roughly one l mile apart. I guess we can see the event recorder for the speeds, or ask the engineer what max speed he attains for,say 30 seconds?

There is nothing so Holy as the Local to Paoli, they say.

I still think the run from Malvern To Exton is quick.

Talking with railroad management has given me plenty of perspective. It is also not hard to overhear crews when they congregate in the MU/Cab-car cab and talk about whatever. I mean its a good source of interesting anecdotes and "dirt", but that is all the full space of those types of cabs are used outside of qualifying rides and storage.

It's not hard to see the pattern. Crews don't randomly hang out in the engine because its loud and they clearly can't do their jobs there and they also don't hang out in gallery car cabs because they are too small. However provide them with a closed coach or a spacious coach-end cab and they frequently end up hanging out.

I mean come on who wouldn't want a nice place to get away from the customers. I don't blame or even fault this behavior, but it shouldn't come at the expense of me or any other paying rider. These employees have highly secure, well paid, union jobs with benefits that almost any other blue collar worker would DIE for. As a result I see no need for any additional perks.

You forget, Luther Diggs would like it if everything was a hybrid bus.

I didn't forget, Chuck. I didn't mention that Loser Diggs is a busman because I'm aware that some bus fans are decent people and I didn't want to insult you. :)

Bob, thanks for being a decent, understanding person.
There is nothing more efficient than rail, heavy or light, and that mode is almost pollution free. Running close to that are trolley buses.
The hybrid diesel buses are the worst offenders, as to pollution, (and low capacity, like our trolley bus). Everything has a place in our systems.

Those are my feelings and opinions.

I don't see why the hell they need a full-width cab. They can shut the door as though it were mid-train and operate the train just fine.

I am sure mgmt will correct observations issues with M-9's.

BTW, on PATH, there is a little peep hole so engineer can see out into the car. The window on the "fireman's side is positioned so there is no way you can see out the front.

Harry D. and I rode it today. I'd say in that stretch we hit 50 mph, no 90's.

See you all on the Oct. 24th Silverliner II trip.
