Talking with railroad management has given me plenty of perspective. It is also not hard to overhear crews when they congregate in the MU/Cab-car cab and talk about whatever. I mean its a good source of interesting anecdotes and "dirt", but that is all the full space of those types of cabs are used outside of qualifying rides and storage. It's not hard to see the pattern. Crews don't randomly hang out in the engine because its loud and they clearly can't do their jobs there and they also don't hang out in gallery car cabs because they are too small. However provide them with a closed coach or a spacious coach-end cab and they frequently end up hanging out. I mean come on who wouldn't want a nice place to get away from the customers. I don't blame or even fault this behavior, but it shouldn't come at the expense of me or any other paying rider. These employees have highly secure, well paid, union jobs with benefits that almost any other blue collar worker would DIE for. As a result I see no need for any additional perks. |
