Silverliner V testing. |

Posted by TransitChuckG on Wed Sep 15 06:08:45 2010 Half cabs! The bone of contention has apparently been settled,. Half cabs as originally designed, the engineers did not get their way. Now I'm waiting for all the "I told you so's" to come up. |

This is simply...astonishing. I'll bet that there was some design problem with the full width cab conversion that would prove too expensive to fix. Still, I am prepared for this to all be some error on the part of the reporter. If this holds true it will make up for a whole raft of bad signaling news I got last night. |

Well, even though I do support full cabs I hate when they block the window. I cannot understand why they cannot use a coating (it does exist) that allows see through operation. BART uses full cabs in their cars (the ones with slant fronts) and you can see through to the front (provided the t/o isn't mean and covers it up). Why can't the rest do that? |

This has shades of the infamous article quoting a high-level PATH official stating that the PA-5s would have half cabs. It was right after they started testing them IIRC. |

Yeah, then they turned out to have not only full cabs, but bulkhead doors with no view whatsoever. In that case however the reporter could have mistaken half-cab for halfable cab, which of course they are. In this case the SEPTA official specifically addressed the issue and why the full cabs were rejected. |

SEPTA went through and installed a full-cab kit, then a month later we see a test train w/o a full-cab kit with a SEPTA official saying the full cab had been rejected. That sounds like the full cab was tested and rejected for some reason that tipped the balance back toward half-cab. |

When I was coming back from LI a few months ago, I was talking to an LIRR engineer about the tinted window in the cab door which also has shield that can block that window completely. He said that he keeps the shield up because he doesn't want anybody looking over his shoulder when he is operating. I wonder if like the NYCT T/Os who cover the R-44 through 68 cab windows in violation of the operating rules and yet operate with R-32 cabs open he is one of the engineers who operates with the M-3 cab door open. I don't know why the MTA couldn't have put the same type of glass on the M-7s and M-8s that was installed on the NYCT NTTs so that the roadbed could be observed but the operator could not. |

I have been told the MNRR cabs have a view to deal with this issue. |
