Now that Fresh Kills has been closed, a bastard stepchild with no discernible use.

Chris: Why would you say that?. Staten Island is a great place to vist and a ride on SIRT is quite different from a ride on the TA (not better or worse, just different). The people are nice if somewhat grumpy at times, but you would be grumpy too if you spent half of your life at sea.

I love the Silver Hippos (I've lived near the D my entire life...) and I believe the Sea Beach Express track is a very slow track, I've seen it where Ive been on a 68 and passed 32s that are supposedly "express" perhaps someone like NETO or Railman can confirm my suspicion.

Miami & Baltimore opened in the early 80's(I took off as a M/M to
ride opening day in Baltimore).Any Rapid Transit system buying cars to expand in North America could be considered.WMATA will probably be ordering cars.Floor hightis a compatability issue, but not unsolvable. Just an open ended idea.

Remember the original SIRT cars were 67 footers. The BMT Standard
of 67 ft cars was used on SI,Philadelphia's Broad St.,& Boston's
Cambridge Line(today's Red Line).

The SOAC cars ran on Lindenwold,Broad St,Cambridge,& Skokie besides NYCTA.
A standardized car is something to shoot for(unless someone's a

There does seem to be enough technical differences to say that the 75 foot R-46's were the last of the Second Generation cras while the R-68's were the first of the Third Generation.

but that would kill any future plans to connect it to the rest of the city not that it would ever happen anyways

But it doesn't. High floor LRVs like the Bombardier Flexity LRVs which form the basis of the Rotterdam 5300, 5400, and 5500 can all operate on both overhead wire and third rail. No real conversion would be required, except maybe a few platform extensions in a few cases. The line would still have third rail and high platforms of the same height they now have. In no way would operating the line with LRVs in any way impair the ability to convert it to an NYCT subway standard someday in the future if a tunnel to Brooklyn is completed. But commonality with the LRVs on the North Shore and West Shore lines would save a large amount of money in reducing parts inventories required to operate Staten Island's rapid transit.

IMHO if they pursue the West Shore line, especially in its flawwed route through the unpopulated and largely uninhabitable route along 440, it is essential it connect directly to the existing SI South Shore route. It is even better if they can operate both into Tottenville, which should push toward operating both with roughly compatible vehicles. Certainly there's room at Tottenville to accommodate four tracks at a combination of high and low platforms to allow for both high and low floor LRVs.

I peronall have nothing against Staten Island. I feel it derves the under water connection that was aborted by the V-Narrows. There is no doubt their equipment is ragged. But I would feel it'd be more justified if they were paying customers all along. That said, I don't think the number of cars they need would kill the MTA to replace them. It's too bad there aren't some other rolling stock out there that could do the job? How about some old LIRR stuff again?

MN ones ran in interchange freight service via Indiana with ex-1100 MU buffer cars.

They has 2 completely different types of electric portions. The SIRT cars had a portion like the D types and R-9s where portions from both couplers advanced and their contact fingers met. The BMT steels has a slide that had to be advanced by moving the cutting valve to the appropriate position which shot the slide from one coupler into the opposite one and pushed it back into the other coupler. The contact fingers on the bottom of the slide made contact with the bottom portion of the other coupler making the connection. When fully retrieved (or "tripped" in BMT terminology), the slide made a loop circuit with the bottom portion of its own coupler.

I have no clue about what most of you are speaking about when it comes to all the letter designations used here. I am not really suggesting that any cars other than what the MTA would normally use be substituted. I merely said that if these cars are ragged, and there is some other alternative, etc. and so forth. I recall photos of old LIRR cars on the Staten Island line. Isn't there something that can be used? I know ho old my suggestions were. I am just wondering what's out there. And just how much money are they gonna save? Is SI part of the system or not? Whose idea is it to save money this way? WTF already?

Who could that be? The only other agency that runs similar cars is the MBTA.

I dunno, some here said something about CTA. But I'm not sure if that's possible.

Why don't YOU secede to NEW JERSEY?
We'd certainly be better off without you...

PATH is keeping 20 PA4's for work trains. All the rest are to be sold to Kawasaki. They may rebuild them for a system in Peru, or they will be scrapped.

CTA has no use for them. They are getting more 5000's than they are 2200 and 2400's. PATH cars are 3' too long and have air brakes, which nobody in CTA is qualified on.
