They has 2 completely different types of electric portions. The SIRT cars had a portion like the D types and R-9s where portions from both couplers advanced and their contact fingers met. The BMT steels has a slide that had to be advanced by moving the cutting valve to the appropriate position which shot the slide from one coupler into the opposite one and pushed it back into the other coupler. The contact fingers on the bottom of the slide made contact with the bottom portion of the other coupler making the connection. When fully retrieved (or "tripped" in BMT terminology), the slide made a loop circuit with the bottom portion of its own coupler.
