Railfanning CTA Brown Line |
|
Posted by ChicagoPCCLCars on Sun Apr 25 14:25:47 2010 The Brown Line of the Chicago Transit Authority has always been a railfan favorite...its preceived as "safe", has direct access to the Loop, and winds it way through real interesting neighborhoods. An added bonus is the outer mile and a half....on the ground with six grade crossings. Many Chicago "L"s were extended at the outer ends by building the tracks on the ground...much cheaper than steel structure. Several lines had streteches of three track structure, sort of a poor mans' storage yard. A NB Brown line train roars on the three track stretch closing in on the Western AV station, end of the steel structure when the line opened in 1907. As soon as the line opened, the surface extension was started and Kimball Av was reached in seven months. The extension went through vacant land all the way, except for a crossing of a branch of the Chicago River. The land owners financed much of the extension, and the vacant tracts were soon city blocks of bungalows and apartment buildings. The "L" right of way could be described as close...really close, as these two photos at Rockwell station show. In between the stations, the "L" line was basically sandwiched in the middle of two alleyways. Three in-line stations are on busier cross streets where the alleyway turns to parallel the busier street alowing buildings to come right up to the "L" property line. My favorite station/grade crossing is Francisco AV....apartment buildings right up to the tracks, 100 foot high trees, and no, the trains don't blow for the crossings, although a short warning toot might be heard. This photo was posted on SubChat in a set last Friday (4/23/10) and shows for one thing how "L" trains move through grade crossings...they coast through. http://www.subchat.com/read.asp?Id=926854 David Harrison |

Awesome shots!!As for the "no blowing for the crossings", I take it there is some kind of quiet zone-like order in effect there?? |

Thanks for the "awesome."There's really no "quiet zone" like on mainline railroads. Transit lines don't come under the same Federal rules umbrella. The pre 1947 Rapid Transit company didn't blow for crossings, so neither did the CTA. Now the Skokie Swift/Yellow line is an exception. When opened by the CTA in 1964, because the "L" trains travelled 65 MPH, it was a safety consideration that trains blow for the crossings. Actually the PCCs honked and now the HP cars hoot. David |

When I lived there the Ravenswood shut down at night, had no service south of Belmont weekend evenings and was two car trains outside rush. Nice that they had to lengthen the platforms for 8s. Now if we could get back Humboldt Park and of course JP. |

Whenever they tear down any buildings, they salvage all the bricks...authentic "Chicago brick" is desired all over the country.Nice that they had to lengthen the platforms for 8s. Now I KNOW JPKBT knows this is not the first time eight car trains ran to Kimball. David |

Helps keep city cattle off the property...good observation that you spotted that. What city critters you ask....doggies, cats, mostly but we do have coyotes, possums, raccoons, and a few wolves. There used to be "deer crossing" signs on the Blue line out near O'Hare. Plus, you'd be surprised that humans under the influence have difficulty walking on those wooden barriers. Here's a closeup over on the Pink line. David |

Thats the South Chicago branch of Metra Electric, the former Illinois Central electrified commuter line. It's not really street running as the tracks are in a median not shared with the automobiles. The line is in the middle of 71st ST from Dorchester AV (1400 E.) to Yates BL (2400 E.) then turns and runs southeasterly in Exchange AV to 79th ST (7900 S.) where it enters private right of way the rest of the way to the end terminal. Theoverhead catenary is 1500 v. DC.David |

The Brown line crossings are approaching their 100th year anniversary, so history is on their side that they'll remain quiet. Plus all of our crossings are protected with gates and flashers and most are within 25 MPH cab signal, maybe 35 MPH. And "L"s stop much quicker that commuters and railroad freights.David |

The original two track "L" from Wilson to Evanston was trolley wire. The Milwaukee gave up running passenger trains in deference to the "L", but they still ran freights. Gradually the tracks were relocated to today's concrete walled embankment. The Evanston stretch was elevated first. The city stretch from Wilson to Howard was elevated last, but with third rail on three of the four tracks. Third rail was later added to the west track that was guntleted for freight operation.David |

When the last through routing before the subway openings was put into place, your beloved Jackson Park always had trolley equipped equipment because of the overhead wire in Evanston. Then when the 4000s were gathered up to operate the State ST subway in 1943, your Jackson Park got the trolley 4000s while the Englewood-Normal Park-Ravenswood got the baldies. In 1949 the CTA sent all subway trains to Howard ST on the north end and separated the Evanston and the Ravenswood into separate routes. Now there was no need to isolate the trolley 4000s to the Jackson Park (B now). I'll have to check pics from 1949 to the mid 50s when the 6200s took over the subway. By the way, the 6200s spend their entire life on the subway.David P.S. You do know that the Englewood-Ravenswood trains 1943-49 were eight cars long. Sorry, but the Brown line eight car trains were NOT the first eight car trains out on the Ravenswood. |
