The original two track "L" from Wilson to Evanston was trolley wire. The Milwaukee gave up running passenger trains in deference to the "L", but they still ran freights. Gradually the tracks were relocated to today's concrete walled embankment. The Evanston stretch was elevated first. The city stretch from Wilson to Howard was elevated last, but with third rail on three of the four tracks. Third rail was later added to the west track that was guntleted for freight operation.
