That probably would make more sense as it would go to the Bronx directly than to turn around at the loop. But would the train still have room at the front [not at the very end of the platform where the rail guards are] to get decent pics of it? |

I don't see why people even like the TOMC - the LoV's, Arnines, Standards and D-types had style - everything else is a box on wheels. I only became a subway fan because of the pre-war cars. I actually hated the so-called redbirds with their boxlike appearance and hard longitudinal seats. |

It actually makes some sense ... to most of the younger folks, those were the trains of their childhood much like the old steels were to us. You don't see folks dissing THOSE because they're not made of wood and pulled behind a Forney engine. :)To each their own ... let's be glad that there's some of ALL of them able to run still. It actually makes some sense ... to most of the younger folks, those were the trains of their childhood much like the old steels were to us.Depends on what TOMC cars is in question. If we're talking about the R-12/15/17 and 33S, then I'm all for that. Those are the true 'Museum' cars. OTOH the repainted Rebirds are just there for more passenger capacity. Their faded yet inaccurate colors along with their radically changed interiors don't do it for me. I agree with BMT Lines, the older equipment, the better. That's where the real history is. Excellent point regarding seating capacity. And with A/C equipt cars, passengers wishing to escape the heat can ride in those cars. Some hygenically challenged enthusiasts riding in those cars may reach the point of ripeness later in the day.It will be just about summer solstice,so anything that keeps malodorousness in check is welcome on a hot, humid day. Running the train around summer solstice also gives the Pagan rail fans a two-fer. |

Back in the late 1970's nostalgia trains ran frequently and many people were disappointed when R9's were used. After all, the cars had been in revenue service until only a few years earlier and older equipment was still running in revenue service in Philadelphia and Boston.I like the R33 and R36 Worlds Fair cars because they are the first new cars I really remember. |

They have 1 of those Subway Series cars at the Seashore Trolley Museum in Kennebunkport, Maine: R33 9327.I agree. If they really wanted to save a redbird set, one pair of the Subway Series Special set should've been kept for Nostalgic purposes. IMO, I would've kept 9394-9395. They were in far better shape than 9712-9713 were in. Also, as 9394's front wrap was for the NY Mets, as in this picture below by Salaam Allah, 9395 could've had a Yankees Wrap on its front: ![]() Now they're living under the sea with Spongebob Squarepants..so we could only dream. |

Ok, it's time for my say on this issue...Although I do enjoy riding the R9s and Low Vs, both sets were retired before my time. Therefore, I do not have the same feel to those cars as I do with the TOMC. I grew up looking, listening and riding the Redbirds and TOMC. To me, they're my version of nostalgia. What I would do if I were in charge is to run the Transit Museum "Fantastic 4" (R12 5760, R15 6239, R17 6609, R33 9306) with the Repainted redbirds...either R36 9400-9401 or 9582-9587). They are currently in far better shape than R33 ML 9010-9011 9016-9017 9068-9069 and 9206-9207 are in. The 8 R33 ML just need a correct makeover from the inside out. I know right now that can not be done and will be in due time. But if the redbirds have been redone and have that shining glow to them, then they can be run and put to good use. I think this summer you will get 1 train of everything...well almost. The TOMC will bring you from Grand Central to the Bronx. From there, you will switch over to the Low Vs for the extra rides. Then the Low V train will bring you back to the Bronx where you will rejoin the TOMC. The 2nd TM trip will be strictly Arnines. The only "main" cars that will be missing use this year will be the D-Types, Triplexes and BUs. It would be great if they had a set accompany the R9s...such as R32s R38s or R40 Slants or a mixed array of cars...but we can only dream of that situation and the R9s will do us fans well enough. Now as I said a few months ago with the R9s during the Holidays, I thought the line and route they were running on for 5 Sundays in a row was too repetitive and lacking variety. However, I then realized from fellow railfans that the other line I was thinking about them to run on was OOS for repairs and then there's the most popular fan base. During that time, 6th Ave serves that purpose more than Broadway does. I, too, felt that the TOMC could've and should've been run. IMO, the 7 line has that fanbase-Queens to Manhattan via 42 Street. Low Vs could've ran on the 42 St Shuttle. BUT, the idea is take what is given to you and be lucky that you have the priviledge to be operated for that consecutive amount of time. It may not be exactly what WE want, but at least it is something. As far as my status, I hope to be chasing the 2 trips for videos and photos. However, I'm not 100% certain if I will be able to do that or not. When the time gets closer, then I'll have a better idea what I will be doing. |

I would think that at the turn of the last centur, railfans of the timedidn't care for the steel battleships which replaced the "character" of forney steam engines, wooden coaches and gas lamps. |

When not running arnines, it was 32's for me years ago. Rarely a set of 16's, 27's and 30's and once a set of artens in revenue. I think we can all be grateful, those of us who ran the 32's *before* they phucked them all up with that spooty air conditioning and weird changes to the bulkeads and cabs. A couple of years ago, had a look inside a "modern" 32 cab and it reminded me of a nuclear power plant with all the crap they wedged in there. |

I was never fond of the IRT cars because of what they replaced, and sorta agree with you ... but then again, like I said, these junkers are what today's kids grew up with and have deep meaning to them. It's all good. :) |
