Just as I remember them. They're still synonimous with the N in my book; in fact, I still consider the R-32s to be BMT cars since they started their careers there. |

Maybe the Pioneer III trucks were best suited for heavier commuter rail cars than lighter subway cars. Bill "Newkirk" |

Green was in back then on a lot of cars. What really impressed me the first time I did revenue in one was how FAST they lit up when you cranked the lever. Coasting sucked, but they were snappy on the takeoff. :) |

The problem with the Pioneer III trucks as with the General 70s which were similar trucks installed on 4 IRT R-29s was that not only did the TA order insufficient numbers of cars so equipped but didn't eve require that all of the cars so equipped be kept together in the same train. As a result 2 cars with the lightweight trucks in a train that had the remaining cars with standard heavyweight trucks made for a poor quality ride. Had the TA ordered 10 cars with each respective type of experimental truck and required that all those cars be kept together in a solid train, the results might have been entirely different. Compounding the situation was that due to certain mechanical problems totally unrelated to the trucks, those 4 cars were held out of service for extended periods of time and the "cesspool of incompetence" that comprised (and still does to a large extent today) upper TA management erroneously concluded that the down time for these cars was "obviously" due to the failure of the trucks and declined to consider any futher orders of non standard trucks. A similar situation occurred with the R-46 rockwell trucks. There was nothing wrong with the truck design per se, but the TA's engineering staff again erroneously specified trucks that were incapable of withstanding the stresses present on the NYCTS and thus mistakenly jumped to the conclusion that the truck design was inherently faulty and overreacted thus setting back truck development for the next contracts of cars until the NTT experimentals of the 1990s. |

When I was a M/M, I found that the GE R-32s would buck if the master controller was advanced immediately into multiple from a dead stop. If I put the controller on the first point just to get it rolling and then went to multiple, the acceleration would be smoother. I didn't have the same experience with the R-27s or 30s or the WH R-32s either. A WH R-32 could be placed right into multiple and the acceleration would be smooth. |

I got 32's fairly rarely and most of them were peppy, others were "bumpy" ... since they were having "cam problems" back then, just assumed I had bad order cars and thought nothing of it ... |

The two things mean exactly the same thing. In older writingson electrical engineering, a circuit we today say was "wired in parallel" was said to be "wired in multiple". |

In Japan, Tokyu Sharyo manufactured PIII trucks under license from Budd. More than five private railways adopted them, some running on the subway lines. Some had success while some replaced them rather quickly. The following page has pictures of the various types mid-page. The page notes (in Japanese) that adapting them to the Japanese standard narrow gauge of 3'6" was part of the problem but I don't buy it since the narrow gauged Sagami Railway ordered them well into the nineties while the standard gauged Keihan didn't for long. The trucks of Tokyu Sharyo (fan site, not official) |
