Newkirk Plaza Rehab

Yesterday, I inspected the current rehab of the Newkirk Ave. station and Newkirk Plaza above. I'm wondering why the walls and wrought iron fences were removed, also exposing the original lattice steelwork for the first time in many years.

Are there plans to deck over the opening that is above the express tracks making the plaza more like a mall ? As as resident in the area back in the 60's, there were talks or plans about decking over the open areas, installing a gazebo etc., basically giving it a whole new look. But that never came to pass.

Any ideas what is in the plans ?

In a related note, anyone here old enough to remember the Waldell Hobby shop on Newkirk Plaza ?

I grew up nearby. I don't remember the hobby store but remember a photo store that was there at least into the late 1970s. LH Martin wasn't in the plaza but a block or two away. What a dump that place was.

Sorry, I moved to the Newkirk Ave area nearly 14 years ago so I don't remember the Waldell Hobby Shop. Recently, Newkirk Plaza has some new franchised tenants; Dunkin Donuts, Golden Krust and (opening within 2 weeks), a Subway. I think it's nice to have a few places like these eateries but I hope the mall does not lose the strength of the mom and pop businesses and become oversaturated with everything from McDonalds to Starbucks.

As for the decking, ugh!!!! You cannot see which train is approaching Newkirk Ave station, let alone get some interesting photos like these:

BTW: For those who are interested in some history, the store behind the Fisherman's Cove restaurant in the second picture is the original 1907 Almac Harware store. To the left of the Newkirk Ave overpass (over the open air CI/BB bound platform), will be the location of a second exit for this station.

Next weekend, all Coney Island bound Q service will run express From Prospect Park to Sheepshead Bay (including the Avenue U/Neck Road G.O.), bypassing Newkirk Ave station.

Thanks for your reply. I don't understand why they are chopping away at the new concrete where the new wrought iron fencing once stood. Unless the steel members holding up the concrete walkway have deteriorated so bad that may the whole concrete walk is being replaced ?

Or maybe they are decking over the open space over the express tracks as once talked about in the late 60's, thus giving the plaza a more open feel to it. Yes that would ruin some nice shots buy NYCT isn't thing along those lines.

Is there a link to a MTA Capital program related to Newkirk Plaza rehab ?

In addition to the rehab, there have been talks about the renaming of the station after its completed. The station name would we changed to Newkirk "Plaza" Station to promote the mall that the station house is located on. I have read that CB 14 and the Newkirk Plaza Merchants Assoc. has brought the proposal to the MTA, but in terms of it being approved I would not know. So you might be also seeing the final days of the B and Q "Newkirk Av" Station. I would hope they also would make the station ADA compliant in this project will boost the area too.

And I thought from the topic title that David was hitting the hard stuff and needed a tuneup.

It is shortsighted to consider ADA compliant if the entire station is able to be accessed by wheel chair. This standard should only be relaxed for older station like Newkirk and Kings Highway where the standard can't be met

Not much details on the MTA website, other than "structural remediation" of Newkirk Ave station.

I will ask around this week, see if part of their plans include (gasp!!!!!!), decking of the open air space.

I spoke to two Granite Construction contractor workers at the "Plaza" this morning.

Good news to all, the open air space will be retained once work is complete. They are curing structural defects at that station, as well as renovating the platforms.

And more news. . .a confirmed sighting that the Newkirk Ave bridge overpass will be replaced. This bridge replacement is a NYC DOT project; I saw two "Road Construction Ahead" signs on Newkirk Ave before the bridge which confirms this.

Beautiful picture with wooden platforms. I believe it's from the late 1940's, early 50's.

I'd guess mid 50's. Note the fresh paintjob on the Standards.

As told to me by Douglas Grotjahn, that photo was taken about 50 years ago in February 1959. Those repainted "Standards" were the very first overhauled cars. Only this eight car set was painted with green bodies and silver roofs. All the later rebuilt Standards" did not have their exteriors painted and were fitted with sealed beam headlights.

As seen in this picture, the old elevated style third rail was replaced later in 1959 with newer rail with wooden protection boards. I remember this vividly as an 8 year old watching track crews changing the rails, watching from the Newkirk Ave. overpass.

Thanks Dave, so the Newkirk Ave overpass will be replaced. Must have some structural deficiencies. Does the rehab call for replacing the old platform crapping pigeons with new ones ? LOL

I like to note that although the Lipton Drug store is long gone, that sign in the 1959 picture still exists over the Chinese convenience store today.
