I'm floored by all this. I can't imagine how anyone operating any kind of train would possibly allow themselves to be distracted in ANY way, for any reason while running but I guess that's me. Still haven't heard the report on the Green line crash in Boston where it was alleged that the operator of that LRT was texting though I'm pretty sure I heard that wasn't the case. Still ... sheesh. :(

Standard policy is to check mobile phone records so the truth in all tragic cases is going to be determined. I read the allegation in the MBTA Green Line case, but the District Attorney denied the allegation.

But I'm floored too. What a thoroughly reckless thing for someone entrusted with people's lives to do. Especially since it's already been documented. I suppose that now there will be random mobile phone record checks against time operating, just as engineers and others who were drug addicts heralded the age of urinalysis after rail incidents.

Agreed ... but STILL ... *IF* this turns out to be true, an engineer, T/O, whatever has no business texting while pounding the road in the first place. And I can state from personal experience how boring it gets doing milk runs on the same iron day after day, routine after routine, X563 clear, etc ... you do NOT take your eyes off the iron for a second. Because it will be THAT second where you screw up. :(

What I take from this (again, we don't know if this is true or not) is that simply on the basis of this story, you know they're already scheduling "Special High Intensity Training" for everyone as I type, along with multiple bulletins and supplements on the way. :(

... and any railfan who can't figure out "thou shalt not distract" perhaps might need the lesson. Sorry to be so hard on this ...

Absolutely. The TA has a zero-tolerance policy in regards to cell phones. I won't even touch my phone while I'm operating let alone text.

Foamers will be very troubled by this...for about a month. Foamers tend to be a very selfish bunch. Mind you, I don't know whether or not this 15 year-old fit the description of a foamer, or was simply a railfan who made an unwise choice.

I don't expect a 15 year old to have seen Vanna about buying a clue. However, *IF* the engineer was actually doing this, that's who I would have a problem with, encouraging the behavior in the first place. I think we know it's pretty safe if folks are HERE ... laptops have a tendency to fall out of your lap when pulling a mini, so we KNOW you're not on the road now. :)

But that could potentially affect vital radio operations.
Believe me, threats will work very well. Stipulate to the train crews that anyone caught using a cell phone while operating will be immediately suspended pending termination and those things will disappear like city pay phones.

It doesn't matter who the Metrolink engineer was texting with.

Thinking of fatal accidents and collisions up and down the east coast, I know of five different incidents where the engineer/operator is known to be on the phone or texting at the time of the incident. In every case, the communications was with friends/girlfriends/family.

And in every single case, the authority/rulemakers had banned using cellphones or text messaging from inside the cab.

Don't know what to do about it. Make more rules when the rules obviously aren't working? Everybody sees train and bus operators yakking away while driving. Even if they've got a private control cab you can hear them through the partition.

Not really.....from what the report shows, he (the engineer) was at fault and in the wrong. He should have either sent the message while waiting at the previous station stop, or in the next stop. Irresponsible. And yeah, I have seen my fair share of engineers and motormen on the cell while operating, though not texting but nonetheless distracting, and kinda unnerving. The only thing the railfan shouldn't have done is respond. And the name foamers......lol funny!! I call myself a railfan when off duty, not a foamer, which sounds more like a reference to a rabid animal. :-D

If you're at work, you're at work. When my wife and I are at work, we do not call each other unless it's very urgent, because it's an an unneeded distraction, and I don't communicate with friends while at work because my job demands and deserves my full attention.

Well, I guarantee something like these kinds of rules infractions are why Metro-North is toying with the idea of installing cameras in the cabs facing the engineers seat, though it is being fought tooth and nail by both engineers and conductors (I always say if that's what they wanna do, LET THEM....a funny fuck like me will give that camera something to record, like those occasional itchy ass and balls days!! LMAO!! Or when I have that major nose boggle that requires good picking, and I juuuuuuuuuuuuuuuust happen to be close to the camera!! LMAO!!

And it's not just engineers who do the cell/text thing and get distracted. There is, in particular, this one girl here at MNR, fellow conductor (name remains anonymous) who is infamous for, and has been in trouble already for, being on the cell, with or without Bluetooth, while doing her revenue collections and sweeps, and even texting while doing revenue collections/sweeps, much to the anger and annoyance of other crew members for whom she has to split assigned cars of work with, and she constantly leaves the sharing crew member to the lion's share of the work, and yeah it has happened on some of my trains where I get complaints from the crew, and yeah one has to tell her to pick up the slack and lay off the phone. And plenty of times, there are conductors who are supposed to be paying attention on reverse moves in the yards, or even on the main (names/identities anonymous) who choose to be on the phone too. Me, I do NOT use Bluetooth at all, not even when I drive, much less when on the train, do I use a phone during an attention-sensitive moment.

If the engineer chose to message the railfan while operating, on his own choice, what wrong did the railfan commit?? He didn't ask the engineer to unsafely disregard his duty to bullshit on a cell with texts. If the fan was bugging him excessively wanting to know where and when his train and others pass thru, that's a whole other story. I don't think Metrolink will be railfan unfriendly. Besides, their time and energies will be more directed towards the great many lawsuits sure to be coming their way!! I hope they have a huge bank account and an exceptional legal team!!

The conductor who slacks off because she's on the phone is making everyone's life harder, but at least she's not endangering anyone's life.

Agreed. It's not up to railfans and the general public to know exactly what constitutes a distraction. Railroads make sure the public knows they shouldn't go for a stroll on the tracks, or similar things, but it's up to the railroad employees to behave responsibly.

When I was a teenager I asked a NYC subway motorman a question through his open door. He just ignored me. I didn't know any better - no one had ever told me not to do that. And I wasn't expected to know better - the motorman was supposed to know how to deal with me.

Yeah the conductor can, when he/she is at the door controls, and not even paying attention enough to know that the engineer either stopped short or overran and pops the doors open with a car or two off the platform, or even the wrong side!! And the people who ride the trains are so wired to go off when the doors open, you would be surprised how someone can fall off not even knowing the car is off the platform.

Or how about chatting on the phone so much, they are too preoccupied to know they have split a switch, didn't see and upcoming derail applied, or passed a red.....they endanger their own life and those they work with!!!
