I agree. It's time we had something brand new. I like Stockholm's newest cars with their radically different cab ends. They have a centered cab, while their older cars had cabs off to one side.

Compare these:

We spend lots of public money for highways, airports and seaports. Why should rail be any different? I'm definitely NOT saying "the hell with private property", but if the feds are going balk at building railroads with public money, then they should do the same with other forms of transportation.

I wholeheartedly agree. New rolling stock in New York City seems to be built according to design standards a number of decades old. I don't see why that can't be changed.

Note that in the second photo, the front window has a removable center panel allowing for emergency egress when needed.

I really do not like how US kid sizes forces you with age. My son will be seven this weekend but he has to wear clothes of 4 to 5. It hurts his feelings. Europe and Japan do it by height in metrics (110-120cm).

Oh yeah my pants are 14-16 and my coats 18-20. Large Americans will have a hard time finding clothes in Asia though.

And one more time, those bucket seats on the Kawasaki R62 cars are the same size as the R44's so don't put the blame on our size. :)

How does a center console add complexity? NYCTA isn't going to let you walk between cars anyway, so you could just as easily put in an offset door like the Berlin H stock cars. That small inconvenience is more than made up for in the much easier OPTO implementation and visibility when the cab is mounted in the center.

The difference was that the National railways of Netherlands and Belgium and France did not nationalize because they wanted too.
The National railroads took over railroads that could not run at a profit and were about to go belly up.
There is not one Freight railroad that is about to go belly up in USA so there is a big difference.

Actually it was my experience that in general the regional and intercity trains operated the same tracks as the freight network. Yes the high speed rail lines are dedicated, but as soon as a train gets off the HSL you can pass a number of freights. It helps that the Europeans run much smaller freight trains, but part of that is a consequence of their weaker couplers. We'll see if they use the distributed power systems developed here in the states to intersperse locomotives throughout trains and reduce coupler stress.

the Flexliners tested in the US were not Danish other than by manufacturer, the cars Amtrak tested belonged to Isreaeli railways.

The Flexliner was developed from the DSB's projects to create a railcar which would integrate electric or diesel propulsion. Thus I'd say it is a Danish design regardless of what country it is operating in or was constructed in.

It is possible the MTA could go to a full length walk-through design by ordering four car articulated trainsets with a cab at one end and a blind end at the other. The blind end could be fitted with a coupling to another R179 set and provide a full width articulated gangway between the two trainsets. Thus the MTA could end up with a full length 8 car train with only the thinnest of doors to contain passenger noise or smell without requiring them to maintain fixed trainsets longer than 4 or 5 cars.

The end of the #4 car could end up looking much like the coupling between the Berlin S-bahn 481 and 482 cars. The only change I could see being made, other than those to reflect the difference between the NYCTA subway system 60 or 75 foot B division car and a BVG S-bahn car, would be to include some form of Conductor's stand in there.

The rear of a Berlin 481 class EMU:

The only bad thing about those rubber-nosed things is that the diesel engined type has an automatic transmission arrangement similar to a bus rather than a hydraulic or electric transmission. yup, i read about their mechanical transmissions. But didn't the BUDD RDCs have automatic transmissions too? Or were they hydraulic? Something tells me they were mechanical. However, the BUDD SPVs had such jerky transmissions, as those described flexliners do, and they were considered to be duds. Other than that, the bodies of those railcars were well made, and robust, and similar BUDD trailer cars are still in service.
