Actually it was my experience that in general the regional and intercity trains operated the same tracks as the freight network. Yes the high speed rail lines are dedicated, but as soon as a train gets off the HSL you can pass a number of freights. It helps that the Europeans run much smaller freight trains, but part of that is a consequence of their weaker couplers. We'll see if they use the distributed power systems developed here in the states to intersperse locomotives throughout trains and reduce coupler stress. |
