It is possible the MTA could go to a full length walk-through design by ordering four car articulated trainsets with a cab at one end and a blind end at the other. The blind end could be fitted with a coupling to another R179 set and provide a full width articulated gangway between the two trainsets. Thus the MTA could end up with a full length 8 car train with only the thinnest of doors to contain passenger noise or smell without requiring them to maintain fixed trainsets longer than 4 or 5 cars.

The end of the #4 car could end up looking much like the coupling between the Berlin S-bahn 481 and 482 cars. The only change I could see being made, other than those to reflect the difference between the NYCTA subway system 60 or 75 foot B division car and a BVG S-bahn car, would be to include some form of Conductor's stand in there.
