Great video - how come he didn't call out White Pot Junction - yes, it is abandoned, but there might be a chance of something being done with it, right ? One could only hope... |

The time spent underground isn't all that long. The 63rd St. tunnel gives itself away with the vertical left wall. Doesn't it go pretty much straight all the way through with no jog? At least that's the impression I got when riding on Fred trains through the upper level. |

The perceived speed of the train vs. the actual speed seemed off to me. It felt like it was creeping along but then emerges at Harold and it felt the same once outside.I'm going to try to ride it tomorrow and explore the station. |

It's the extended lens.Really close up filming. Makes the train look like it's moving slower than it actually is. I love this gentleman's work. He has an eye for capturing minute detail. |

Whatever it is that made it look that way it just felt weird. One of my comments earlier was that if it crept from the portal into the station the E train would beat it. While watching this I thought, well, I guess the E train will be faster and then it came out of the tunnel. I thought it had barely gotton itself up to 60th st at that point.I did like the narration, now I know what to watch for, if I can see anything. I'll experience it real life today. |

It took less than 2 minutes for this train from the time it started to move to when it entered the curve from Park to 63rd. Presumably during those same 2 minutes a train could have been coming into GCT. And 2 minutes later (or even sooner) another train could have been leaving GCT from a different platform. So that would suggest that they can run at least 30 tph, probably more. They are only running 24 tph in the draft schedules, IIRC. |

I was wondering that too, but he says in the video that's heading to something called “midday yard”; which I imagine is another part of the yard they use to lay up trains in the middle of the day (i.e. between rush hours). |

I watched this guy's "RFW" videos on Metra trains not too long ago.He should cut his videos' intro down to maybe ten seconds; it's a minute-long cacophony of LIRR DE30AC horns. |

The "Midday Storeage Yard" was originally a TA project. The 63rd st tunnel, and Queens Bypass needed an area for the same purpose that the LIRR does to this very day. The tunnel to the facility was designed to leave the Bypass tunnel around the same area. The project was canceled along with the Bypass, but the ROW is still available for a possible revision some day. What gets me,is the fact that the LIRR tunnel was extended when the 63rd st tunnel was connected to the Queens Blvd line. Yet,the Bypass tunnels were canceled, even while there were TWO TUNNEL BORING MACHINES DIGGING THREE TUBES UNDER THE YARDS. THE PLAN CLEARLY SHOWS THE TUNNELS in design. Even if they weren't going to use the tunes right away they still should have built them for future use. This is why I say to this day that the MTA favors its Commuter rail system and riders more than city transit. I will continue to say that NYC needs to get rid of the MTA and its suburban bullshit and let the City of New York operate our subways/buses. 11 billion dollars for this nonsense no Sunnyside station and no Bypass tunnels? Bullshit. Somebody should be going to jail for larceny and grand theft, not praise from the masses. |

I had been thinking the midday storage yard would have been a good idea, even without the Bypass. To eliminate reverse peak traffic tlat might not be needed, and gan cause congestion at tunnels. |

A Sunnyside Station if positioned properly could have Metro-North stopping in Queens, a more useful LIRR stop in Western Queens than HPA or LIC. |

I read elsewhere that the issue with the M3's is not the grades, but that the cab signals are incompatible with the (signal?) technology used in the tunnels. So the M3s were never tested in the tunnels because they knew they would never be used.Believe I saw this recently on rr.net. It makes more sense to me than the idea that they can't get up certain grades. |

Well, you can draw your own conclusions. Maybe they should borrow some Metro North M3s. From the inside, MN M3s are in better shape than the LIRRs M7s |

It makes more sense to me than the idea that they can't get up certain grades.Obviously they can get up the grades. Low gears, or their electrical equivalent, allow a weakly powered vehicle to get up a steep grade, very slowly. Some people have claimed that they can't make it up the grade quickly enough to prevent a traffic jam, if they are forced to stop. That is at least plausible, though I haven't any present supporting evidence. |

"It makes more sense to me than the idea that they can't get up certain grades."The grade issue is the official line. The signal incompatibility doesn't make sense. If its out there on the road on any division, it should be able to work with the signal system thats in service. Why would ESA signals be different than the rest of the line that the M3s run on? |

Quoting below from a post on rr.net by a poster "workextra" who is generally a good source. The official reason is the M3 fleet was not rebuilt with the ESA cab signal aspects on their ADU if they run into ESA they will detect a no code condition and display a restricting aspect the whole way. The m3 will make the grades but officially have never been tested there. Despite the use of the term by both you and "workextra", I don't know that there is any "official line" that has been made public. |
