This Date In NYC Transit History: Friday, September 8, 1989 [25 years ago]... As best it can be determined, the last known recorded run of R-10 cars in regular passenger service was on that date mentioned above. It was said that the final train was the 7:36am put-in from Rockaway Park Yard, and the consist of the cars were n/#3209-3157-2961-3159-3181-3169-3008-3168/s. At that time, and due to a Con Ed asbestos problem along the IND 8th Avenue line at 50th Street, "C" service only operated as far north as 34th Street-Penn Station. There was said be an observation of this same R-10 train on Friday, September 15, 1989, but there was no further detail or confirmation if it was in actual passenger service, or simply being transferred from yard to another for disposal as scrap. The "C" line assignment sheet during the full week of September 11-15, 1989 did not list any R-10's at all. (Source: The "Bulletin", New York Division, Electric Railroaders' Association, October 1989 issue.) -William A. Padron ["(C) 8 Avenue Local"] Tuscarora Almanac - September 8, 2001 - The Book of First Runs Manhattan, New York New York City Transit Authority IND Division This is the first day of operation of the "V" Queens - 6th Avenue Local. Regular service on the "V" will not begin until December 17 however the new service plan was in operation for fifteen hours today as a test of the new schedules. Source: New York Division Bulletin / December 2001 Tuscarora Almanac – September 8, 2018 – The Book of First Runs Manhattan, New York New York City Transit Authority IRT Division The Cortlandt Street station on the IRT South Ferry line re-opens after having been closed since September 11, 2001. The station and about one thousand feet of tunnel were destroyed with the collapse of the Word Trade Center Towers. The line itself re-opened on August 31, 2002 restoring service between Chambers Street and South Ferry stations. Cortlandt Street remained closed due to ongoing construction at the WTC site. Thank you, as always!!!I remember reading in the Daily News in the summer of '89 about the "ancient" R10s running in the C. Also that early was run of the V was on a Saturday (which I remember), even thought he V was and was intended to be a weekday-only service. We all know what happened a few days later.... Regarding the Cortland Street station, an empty shell of the original was built in 2002 - but then, as part of the Oculus construction was demolished without ever having been used or even finished. So the station that's there now, is actually Version 3.0. I know this for a fact- I remember riding through the dark shell in the early 2000s, then complete daylight again in the 2010s. The present station is actually inside of an enclosed bridge, whereas Versions 1.0 and 2.0 were in tunnel. |

I,ve posted on this before, but its worth reposting:the 2nd ave crew quarters above the F trains former terminal and present crew quarters is the ONLY section of the original 2nd ave subway that was actually built.it was a large, empty room 4 tracks wide shell that was built within the confines of the f train ROW. |

In reply to the entry for September 8, 1989, now being it is 32 years ago back then...The irony is that, in a full circle, R-10 car #2961 was also in the first known recorded regular in-service passenger run, as part of the pilot set with those overhauled cars operating along the "C" on February 22, 1985. The consist on the initial trip, going from Bedford Park Boulevard to Rockaway Park, was s/#3176-3011-2961-3003-3021-2960-3107-3047/n. -William A. Padron ["(C) 8 Avenue Local"] |

That was an interesting month, September 1989. A and C service cut back to 34th, E on the F, Q service extended northward to 207th St to cover for the A (allowing R38's to make a rare post GOH appearance on the Brighton line) and the D running local north of 59th. 57th/6th was closed and rush hour B trains ran only to Rock Center, otherwise just a shuttle between Stillwell and 36th St. |

Interesting that Route 42 in Philly was originally Walnut and Chestnut. That for many years was SEPTA Route D and is today's Route 21 bus. The Route 42 bus still runs on Chestnut and Walnut (normally) from 33rd Street eastbound and to 34th Street Westbound before doing the "Hospital Loop" along Civic Center Boulevard to 38th and Spruce and is on Spurce and then Marshall Road (or to 61st and Pine) the rest of the way. |

The former train crew quarters at 2nd Ave/Houston, located at the north end of the station, and now occupied by NYCT Stations Lighting, is two tracks wide. There are a series of short steps that lead up to the planned future northbound 2nd Avenue Subway platform, accessible today only from the now closed off full station mezzanine consisting of electrical hardware parts storage. The two track section at this location would have tied into the Brooklyn Fulton Street subway at the present Court Street station. The express tracks f the 2nd Avenue Subway would have turned south (East) towards Williamsburg and six track station at South 4th Street. Interesting note. The IND planers, and the initial 2nd IND system plans, the IND distinguish between the two 4th Street stations by including the geographic designation. West 4th station in Manhattan, and South 4th station in Brooklyn. The two 6th Avenue subway express tracks would have continue past 2nd Avenue Houston and into Brooklyn to meet the two 2nd Avenue Subway express tracks at South 4th Street. With a third pairs of tracks coming from a connection with the 8th Avenue Subway (Tracks A1/A2) south of the Canal Street station at Worth Street. |

I question the name that many posters use for the so called “So 4th St” station shell. Since the line if built would run lengthwise under So 4th St it’s more likely that the station would have been called “Union Ave” which is the intersecting street the the Crosstown Line runs under. |
