They restored the "Columbus Circle" name tablet mosaics on the 1 line not long ago, that's just one reason I don't think that name is going anywhere. It is too ingrained in the minds of New Yorkers. Plus both Italians and Hispanics would protest loudly against any plan to change the name. The fact that Columbus really was a nasty son of a bitch, cutting off the hands of Indians if they didn't bring him enough gold, won't change that. |

When all the Ten Commandments are removed, crosses removed, Confederate statues gone, Columbus will be the cause of the day and you'll see scenarios like the one I present, become a reality. |

The guy who ran people down with the car wasn't even a typical member of the (already small) neo-Nazi group, which is a small portion of the "alt-right". He was the proverbial "lone nut", but because he was inspired by a group that was ostensibly there to prevent removal of a Confederate statue, suddenly all Confederate statues must be removed to show solidarity with the woman he ran over. It's ridiculous. Taking down those two busts from the Hall of Fame, where they are surrounded by dozens of others, is especially ridiculous. As for the tile design at the 40th St. IRT fare-control area, the MTA denies it was meant to look like the Confederate flag, but others say it was, in honor of the Southern heritage of New York Times owner Sulzberger. (How's that for irony, a Confederate flag for the New York Times?) Proving it one way or the other at this date would be difficult. |

He was a typical member of the Nazis, he had been a Nazi for a long time. This has nothing to do with solidarity with Ms. Heyer. This Nazi protest was only started because the City of Charlottesville had already decided to remove the monuments to treason and the Nazis had gone down there to protest the removal. The Confederate statues must be removed because they commemorate people who wanted to destroy this country for the sole purpose of keeping a race of people enslaved. The fact that the people who came to protest against that are Nazis makes me feel even less sympathetic to the people who want these monuments kept. That place in the Bronx is called the Hall of Fame for GREAT AMERICANS. Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson are not great Americans and do not and have never belonged there. Perhaps they can build a Hall of Fame for Great Traitors and put their busts there along with Benedict Arnold and Aldrich Ames. |

Whether or not you or I consider them "great Americans", the panel of Electors who voted them in did. I'm surprised that Gov. Cuomo or CUNY have the authority to just remove the statues, I thought there was some kind of trust governing the Hall so that it would be preserved. I take an interest in it because I grew up across the street from the campus it is on, and went through the hall many times as a child. Transit relevance: The Burnside Avenue station on the Jerome Ave. line used to have the secondary name "New York University", referring to the campus on which the Hall of Fame for Great Americans is located. |

From a previous message:"Proving it one way or the other at this date would be difficult." Actually that is EASY prove in the direction of one thing HAVING NOTHING to do with another thing! From Wikipedia: The New York Times is an American daily newspaper, founded and continuously published in New York City since September 18, 1851, by The New York Times Company. -- This PRE-DATES THE CIVIL WAR! The New York Times has long been regarded within the industry as a national "newspaper of record".[12] It has been owned by the Ochs-Sulzberger family since 1896; Arthur Ochs Sulzberger Jr., the publisher of the Times and the chairman of the New York Times Company, is the fourth generation of the family to helm the paper. -- 1896 is well AFTER the Civil War! The original Times Square local station was built as a part of the original IRT subway, and opened in 1904. -- The expanded Times Square local/express station opened in 1917. Arthur Ochs Sulzberger Jr. (born September 22, 1951) is an American journalist.[1] Sulzberger became the Publisher of The New York Times in 1992, and Chairman of the Board of The New York Times Company in 1997, succeeding his father, Arthur Ochs Sulzberger.[2] Arthur Ochs Sulzberger Jr. was born in Mount Kisco, New York, the son of Barbara Winslow (née Grant) and Arthur Ochs "Punch" Sulzberger Sr., the grandson of Arthur Hays Sulzberger, and the great-grandson Adolph Ochs. -- So where is the "Southern Heritage"? Arthur Ochs "Punch" Sulzberger Sr. (February 5, 1926 – September 29, 2012) was an American publisher and a businessman. (The DAD!) Born into a prominent media and publishing family, Sulzberger became Publisher of The New York Times and Chairman of the Board of The New York Times Company in 1963. Sulzberger relinquished to his son, Arthur Ochs Sulzberger Jr., the Office of Publisher in 1992, and Chairman of the Board in 1997. Born February 5, 1926 - New York City, New York Died September 29, 2012 (aged 86) - Southampton, New York -- So where is the "Southern Heritage"? Adolph Simon Ochs (March 12, 1858 – April 8, 1935) was an American newspaper publisher and former owner of The New York Times and The Chattanooga Times (now the Chattanooga Times Free Press). Ochs was born to a Jewish family in Cincinnati, Ohio, on March 12, 1858. His parents, Julius Ochs and Bertha Levy, were both German immigrants. His father had left Bavaria for the United States in 1846.[1] Julius was a highly educated man and fluent in six languages that he taught at schools throughout the South, though he supported the Union during the Civil War.[2] -- Question - So why would a man who supported the Union during the Civil War influence a "Confederate" subway station tile design at the age of 59? -- Some things do not take a great deal of research to refute!
