HISTORY OF - ex-NY EL forney Locos found in Alaska |
|
Posted by JOE @ NYCMTS - NYCTMG on Wed Jul 12 23:14:24 2017 Hello ALL ----A few of you here may have heard about or seen a photo here or there of those few rusting away remains of some ex-New York Elevated Railroad Forney Steam Locos sitting on a semi-flooded tundra near Nome, Alaska. Well, here is a wepbage (LINK further below) with the entire History of when and how the locomotives got to Alaska, and the new short railroad line and small industry they were involved in building - with many excellent photos of the construction of the railroad and the related buildings taken back in 1902, 03, etc. The Railroad and business continued along up to the big flood of 1913 when the entire railroad, equipment, and adjoining buildings were pretty much destroyed, and the line went out of business and was abandoned. And there are 1913 and present era photos of that. These Manhattan EL Forney locomotives have rusted away where they sat from the flood, 104 years ago. FINALLY -- the whole story....and with great photos --- LINK BELOW ! NY EL FORNEYS on the Council City & Solomon River RR near Nome, Alaska For those few fellow dinosaur-historians here who may be interested, enjoy ! Regards - Joe F |

Thanks for this, Joe!In the same vein of abandoned Alaska steam locos, the White Pass & Yukon worked its steamers to death in WWII. Converted from standard gauge, at war's end they were too worn out and it was too expensive to ship them back to the mainland, so they were tossed over the side, in some cases, to be used as fill under the roadbed. |

Joe,Many thanks as always, for researching this and then sharing it! Could there be any other surviving Forneys anywhere in the world (in any kind of condition)? The grand ERA elevated roster compiled and mimeo'd many years ago, IIRC listed Forneys with their scrap dates & notes on sales to other railroads. |

Hello Express Rider (and Dave, and MainR3664)Thanks guys for your appreciation of the link and its material ! Didn't generate much interest here at S/C, tho, but then it is over 100 years old, heh ! Express Rider -- I believe one to maybe 3, Chicago EL Forneys are around saved intact -- one I recall is in a Museum. I have seen photos of it on a track outside the museum -- I may have a copy or two of that one in my photo collection. I don't know of any BRT or IRT Forneys that survived to these times -- other than those sold over 100 years ago to then small railroads in US and I believe some to Europe (China, etc) --- likely long ago also all scrapped. regards - Joe F |

Hello Express Rider !Here (BELOW 3 PHOTOS) is ONE of the 2 or 3 Forney's saved -- this one is Loco # 9 of the Chicago Lake Street Elevated Railway -- its an 0-4-4 built in 1893 by Rhode Island Loco Works -- its restored and preserved at the St. Louis Museum of Transportation. Its pretty much on the same style and class as a number of Manhattan EL and Brooklyn EL Forney locos. The Museum also has BRT / BMT 1300 Series EL Gate Motor Car # 1365 there also. ![]() ![]() ![]() regards - Joe F |

Hello Bill ---About 12 years ago I saved 2 photos of 1365 shown stored OUTSIDE at the vast grounds of the St Louis Museum --- painted in the NYC-BOT Olive Drab Green with silver-grey roof. I can't find those photos now and they may have been a few of the 100 or so 'lost' (of the many many thousands successfully transferred) when I changed computers about 7 years ago. And the St. Louis Museum has NO PHOTOS (just roster lists) of their equipment on their website -- likely because they are trying to sell their booklet of museum rail car collection photos. #1365 is still listed in their collection -- I hope it was moved INSIDE over the past many years so it doesn't end up as rotted kindling wood. It really should go to Branford,to be with its 2 sister 1300 cars there, heh ! Regards - Joe F regards - Joe F |

Excellent photos! Thank you for posting them.Your photos bring the past into the present. A "barn find;" one of the 54 Composites sent to the Illinois Terminal Railway during WW2, would be nice but according to the Elevated Railways of Manhattan book, they were all scrapped. |

All but 4 IRT Forney locomotives were sold off by 1916. After 1930, only 2 remained, #137 and #295. During WWII, they were found in the 133rd St Yards under tarps, by field agents of the Office of Defense Transportation. They ordered them to be scrapped on Feb 9th, 1943. |
