You won't see them here now..but one can wish.


Actually, I actually wish they would through the "hand-me-downs" onto the Eastern division, as the R160's arrive, just like they usually did when new equipment arrives to the system. That would probably mean that the R32's would have come back...after all, they will probably be the last of the old class of 60 footers to remain. But of course, we know that isn't to be, as the east is where the brand new stuff is coming this time around.

Of course there probably won't be an extreme shuffling of 60 footers as the R160's arrive as other than the JML, the C is the other line that usually gets all the old "junk", but an R32 on the C isn't really all that special now is it....

It was just as rare to see an R-32 with an original front route curtain and no adjacent multicolored curtain in the mid-70s.

I'v been back to Queens when the statue of liberty was re-dedicated, I visited the old neighborhood with my family and got to meet Bob he then gave me his then address but I lost that too, and I never did get to see Harold Smith as he was gone at the time,he has some collection of transit photos of that area and the transit system as well, what is the zip code for that area? thanks. The store that displays ridgewood TV is now a coffee shop
the roof you shot this photo from just had some roof work done
the lower part of the photo, the wall facing fresh pond started leaning over and was replaced with new construction
scaffolding was just removed early Friday morning

Thanks, I miss the ol neighborhood, right next to the apartment bldg was a billards hall down in the basement of that building,it was a hangout for a lot of the older kids, and accross from the tv store was a soda malt shop Von Brown's I think...almost every Sat evening mostly the high school boys would gather outside and sing and harmonize the popular doo wop songs from the 50's and 60's we could hear them from out window facing the Fresh Pond train station,I plan on visiting N.Y.C. next summer and this will be on my visit stop for shure, thanks monorail. Hey, I went to CK too, except in the late 80's.

It was R27-30's that were burned in the fire, so apparently R27-30's were in the station. There are photos of the trains that burned in the station on nycsubway.org:







I forgot what caused the fire, but I don't know if it was a train or not. Fires were easily caused, as the platform was wood.

The Main Street we all know about in Queens is in Flushing.

Take a look at a map or try looking up phone numbers (there are 2 pay phones inside the IND subway station on platform level.), what do they read? 212 Area Code.

It appears to be coupled to/parked next to an arch-roof, so it's probably storage or a school car. It could be one of today's museum cars.

I rode an R40 slant J train as recently as March 2001.

R38's have been spotted on the M in the early 1980's, but I know of no appearance by them ever on the J or L.

The R32's were more common on the M, however, R38's did show up on the M also, especially in the early or mid 80's. I don't remember ever seeing one on the J. The M had everything in the early 80's. This is probably because it ran to COney Island, and they would throw CI trains on it. I have seen every 60 foot car on the M except the R10's (although the R10's were known to occasionally show up on the J, even if ever so rarely).

The M was a very colorful line back then, it had just about everything. The slants were also common on the M, pre-GOH, and even after GOH. I remember riding on a few M R40 slants in the early 90's, after GOH. They were more common on the L, however, they did show up on the M quite often too. I don't ever remember seeing a J slant, but I'm sure they did venture there, even if occasionally.

It probably took a lot of courage to ride a dark car on the LL in 1980. I wouldn't have done it even if Curtis Sliwa himself was with me.

I remember riding "dark cars" on the LL with my father in the 70's. I used to think as a kid that the subway was taking your life in your hands, and back then it probably was.

They only stayed for a short while[a few years] before they wanted the R10's back...
After all..they were better cars and worked..where as the 16's broke down..had door problems...and other crap wrong with them.

Strange...that they[R16'S] were able to run on the Eastern lines for years...covering the n15 almost exclusively untill 1967...

Heh, yeah, and heaven forbid the other lines would be stuck with the R16's...they were "good" enough for the east though.....
I used to HATE them with a passion. I remember later still, around fall 1986, the M line was INFESTED with them once again. Even the R27-30's were missing for a while. I remember sitting on one of them one day thinking something to the effect of, "I can't believe they stick us with all the sh*t cars". Then, seemingly as quickly as they took over the M line, they were gone. When they turned up missing, I just figured they were out getting their green paint sceme like the R10's. I nerver imagined they were out getting cut up. The funny thing is, that now, I only wish one of those rolling disasters would pull into the station so I can take a ride on one.

Strange...that they[R16'S] were able to run on the Eastern lines for years...covering the n15 almost exclusively untill 1967...


What was the "15"? Was that Coney Island to 168th St, via Brighton like the QJ was later on?

The 15 never ran past Broad st...sort of...

Its funny the way the switch worked out.

The QJ somewhat replaced the 15...during the weekdays...while the JJ ran at night/weekends[covering the QJ]..During the weekday rush hour..the JJ operated as the 14's replacement....or as the Broadway Brooklyn Local/Jamaica skip stop...in the AM...

Trains also ran from Canal st to Rockaway Pky in the PM rush...while the RJ ran to Jamaica...

July 1968,all that changed....
The KK replaced the JJ in Brooklyn/Queens during the rush hour..QJ during the evening nights weekends.
The RJ was replaced by the QJ/RR NASSAU ST Specials services...

It seemed like while the TA had good intentions...there were too man lines on BWAY....mixed with very poor planning.

They did run in J service a least a few times..regardless..but never for a long period of time...

They were "unsafe" because of the sloped ends, but that's why the "modified" the ends. I don't see how they would be any less unsafe than all the other lines they have run on, but perhaps it's because of the Crescent St curves that would make them more unsafe on the J.

The 15 was the Jamaica Local, 168th St-Broad Street. My grandpa drove that route up to the time he died in 1965. We took a ride with him some time in 1963 (which started my love of subway trains) :) My parents took a picture of the stacked destination signs (he was piloting a train of R-16s), but I have no idea where it is now :(

Prior to 1967 the eastern and southern division never mixed. In fact the only trackage they shared what the Chambers-Broad St. section on Nassau St.

I've had family in Woodhaven since the 1940's and not a single person ever called the line by it's number. In fact, I didn't learn of the BMT number system until I discovered nycsubway.org.

My parents were married in August 1967, and they left for Las Vegas, where they lived until 1969. My father mentioned that the whole system was unrecognizable when he got back.

I rode just about everything on the M back then. And the J and L were interesting too! Hell, compared to now, the whole system looks different. I wish I could place the memories of it in my head into photos.

Whats really interesting is the honeycomb door filler burned inside the panels in the cars and melted the aluminum skins causing ponding in the door tracks. It was also hot enough at the floors so as to cause for the steel girders to sag and cause car buckling. There was one R44 at 207 Yard which was burned so bad the centerline of the car was short of a foot lower than the bolster height. Bring on the marshmellows!

yeah..and the fact that some Rush Hour TT trains use to run to EAST NY...and layup in the yard.

Outside of that..you'd never see any 16's down there unless it was on the Chambers/95th st Special...

The 16's weren't in the EAST at this time...

The were running out of Jamaica yard.. on the EE/GG lines.

In this picture, the Mall / Robert Hall Village does exist. You can tell by the fencing on the left. The MTA building is what's missing on the left. The picture was taken mid platform, of two four car s M shuttle trains bound for Myrtle & Broadway. Christ the King HS is on the right hand side of this picture, but not visible.
