The red is technically the nicest scheme. They looked the best of their lives just before they were retired. I totally agree, but I am nostalgic to the other scheme, just because of all the happy times I remember on them in that grafitti "scheme".I had plenty of happy times too on the reds, and of course the R42's as they are now....but for some reason, the other photos bring back SO many memories. And the last photo with Knickerbocker Ave!! What a hellhole all the M's stations were. I remember it like it was yesterday going through there everyday, and Knickerbocker was greay trim with light blue windscreens, although you could barely tell because of a decade+'s worth of grafitti.

Of course, I'm relatively young. The 27/30s *NEVER* had numbers in them. Their arival was the occasion of the BMT going to all letters. That pic is staged. I remember the seat cushions used come out of their frames on the corner seat opposite the cab. They were all over the eastern division. I remember... whenever my grandfather said we were riding the J (or K)train, I knew that meant riding those old black...err...green cars with the wicker seats and the doors that went "roaaar"R-32. |

The insides were usually even worse than the outsides.This is your typical interior of the R10, R16, R27-30, R32, R38, R40, R42, and all the IRT class cars. Actually, usually they were even worse than this!    This C Train is typical of how I remember both the inside and outside of the R27-30's, and actually the stations too in the early 80's! They may have been thrown on the R too. But then again, while the L, M, and J lines were treated like the asshole of the system, the R was just as step ahead as the armpit of the system. |

I vaguely remember riding an R9 on the L line when I was a REAL small kid. I may have had one on the M, but I really can't confirm that. I have a very faint vision of being on an R9 on the L riding through the Bedford Ave station, but that's where the memory fades away. I am almost positive that memory isn't that of am R16. |

The 27/30 were ALL OVER THE PLACE THEN...You'd catch them on any and ever line at any time. It's true that the east had some of the crapyest rolling stock around.. When the R46 went down for the count..ALL our 27/30 and 42 were yanked to spead them around the system and we were stuck with the R- Crapsteen.... As if things could get worse.... R16 in the 80's? It couldn't get any worse than that. |

If you mean before Archer Avenue,People probably took the E, F of J trains to Sutphin, Parsons, 168 or 169 or 179 for the buses. Before 1989 the buses mostly ran to subway stations on Jamaica and Hillside Avenue instead of to Archer. For the LIRR they probably walked on Sutphin. |

On a hot summer day, all the doors and windows would be open, the little fans whirling, and I can still here the clickety-clack on the way to the beach.The red R30's in their final days on the C also were nice, but nothing compared to the R10's there. |
